These things looked so good I had to post. They started out as your typical beat up scratched junk you find at a swap meet. Doug, from Best Of Show, asked if we could fix a set of these for that white 67 HEMI GTX they have and since we do all our SS trim for our own cars and he's a friend I said we would do them for him. This particular cap had 22 dings in it not to mention the scratches.
It's a very time consuming process, beating/banging, filing, sanding and polishing. After their polished, polish them again. Then all the finger flipping around making paint masks.
This post is not to promote this type of restoration work here at B/E & A Restoration Parts, it's to show what can be done with our old beat up parts left in the right hands. No, I didn't personally do the work, I'm bragging on one of my guys here.

I have 8 of these caps and don't know the process to get them dent free so any tips on repairing dent would be great.
For the recessed black area I had a car graphics place laser cut some 3m vinyl. Although not correct they will last longer and they made a few extra so if something happens I have some to repair with.

in my case, lots of patience with a dolly and hammer and some tools that i specially made to tackle this job.
Then lots of sanding by hand to very fine grit and in the end polishing.
i then rubbed on some coearse polishing compund by hand because from the factory they didnt have a mirror finish.
the painting process is a pain, lots of masking and patience...and you have to do it right so that the edges are not too defined...since from the factory the edges had a bit of overspray they were not "hard" you can do that by rolling the edge on the masrking tape or by making some carboard "windows" to mask but leaving a soft edge.
thats the way i did it basically but it takes a lot of patience, work and man hours.
