I've got a 1964 Fury with the 727 torqueflite and pushbotton gear selector. Pushing in the "Drive" and "Reverse" bottons activates both these options fine and the transmission brake works well and kicks the car out of gear when selected.

Here's my problem. When I push in "1st" or "2nd" gear buttons it seems to activate "Drive" as it shifts through all three gears just as if it was in "Drive". Also, the "1st" and "2nd" gear buttons don't stay pushed in and pop right back out. The gear botton stays pushed in on Drive" "Neutral" and "Reverse".

The transmission seems to drive fine I just can't activate "1st or "2nd".

Any suggestions or thoughts on the problem?

Thanks,

Butch

You need to crawl under the dash and watch the end of the cable as each button is pushed. Start at Reverse and watch to make sure the cable core moves as each button is pushed.

When pushing the Reverse button the shifter mechanism should push the cable core into its housing then pushing Neutral, Drive, "2" and "1" should pull the cable core out.
