Are the Power steering boxes supposed to be painted or were they bare metal?

Thanks,

Mike

Not in 69. Leave it natural.

Many dealers painted these units (black) when they arrived from the factory rusty.

Could be "black", if it was serviced by a dealer,....as dealer stock would (should) have been delivered painted for "shelf life" at the dealership,........I've parted LOTS of A,B, and E performance year cars over 30 yrs, and painted boxes were the perverbial "needle in the haystack" find....

Not the ps pump, the ps box mounted on the K-frame. Is yours painted?

going with the unpainted side of the debate, How would one restore/refinish one to look new?
Are you painting with a natural type paint or clearing a stripped clean box?

Always did mine natural in the past until my buddy had a noted restorer do his Daytona. Came back black so I followed suit. If natural is the consensus than I'm smarter than I look and should stop doubting myself...

None of mine were ever painted. On my charger I prepped and used eastwoods diamond coat clear to keep it looking like new cast.

I have a Roger Gibson article and it says natural or semi gloss black and recommends Krylon 1613. Natural boxes treated with eastwood heavy duty anti-rust.

I've seen a lot of Rogers cars, like the 71 440/6 Challenger with slotted bumper up front, and the non slotted in back, with the 70 only mirrors, and the Plymouth "6 BARREL" air cleaner decal on it....and the 70 GO- WING......and.....

or the 71 Charger with 72 grille, and...73-4 rocker mldg,....and...and

I wouldn't even want to poke a stick in the white 69 Daytona that he's...uhmm.... "rest-oring"....glad it ain't my car, or money
