I'm trying to decide between Holley and Edelbrock (AFB/AVS) carburetors for my 472 hemi build. My other question is how much cfm per carburetor do I need for this setup?

9.8:1 Compression
Mopar Performance Heads with a bowl job and blend
Hughes Hydraulic Cam 232 deg intake/245 deg exhaust @0.050"

This is going in a 4,000 lb charger with 3.91 gears and a 2800 rpm stall converter

I'm using a stage v single plane dual inline intake manifold so it will accept either brand. I've had good luck with holley carburetors on my previous engines, however it looks like I'd have to remove the front carburetor to change the jets on the rear carburetor with holleys. But that' not really a problem once they are tuned. So which would you recommend for the best cold/hot starting, fuel economy, and ease of setup? Has anyone tried to fit a pair of road demon jrs on a stage V manifold?

I'd prefer any Holley over an Idlebrick carb.....1200-1500 CFM total would be good for street use

I ran the Stage V with dual 1850 Holleys. I had to run the metering plate on the one carb due to carb spacing with that manifold. The Holleys also create a problem with getting an aircleaner to fit. The AVS's are supposed to be a much better setup.
What do you plan on running for an Air Cleaner? The round 69 style Hemi Aircleaner cannot be made to work with Holleys.

Sheldon,....I believe it's Classic haulage has a Holley based factory style Chrome Dome avaliable, last I heard

Either can be made to work but I prefer the Edelbrock carb for street use. The metering rod design allows you to quickly dial in the part throttle AF ratio. The only way to do that trick easily on a Holley carb is to use one of he higher end carbs that has the billet metering plates. The 1850 carb is inexpensive but it can't be tuned very easily.

i have the eddy 650 thunders on mine. they work for me. i don't doubt that a well set up set of holleys will get me a better e.t., but these are so easy to tune and are very streetable.

When I was working with my setup the chrome dome top just barely cleared the fuel bowls of the 1850 Holleys let alone trying to get a base and air filter to work. I ended up running those fugly triangular foam top aircleaners. The aircleaner issue is why I threw away 40HP and went back to a stock intake.
If you can run an Air grabber style rectangular air cleaner or don't mind a non-factory air cleaner the Holleys are viable. The Stage V is higher than stock though so that's another issue to watch. I lifted up the back of the hood about 3/8" and cut the necks off those ugly aircleaners to be able to close the hood, I had considered spacing the K-member down.
One thing I am considering is to try two 650 double pumpers and mount them sideways. I've got the parts downstairs but I haven't tried mocking it up yet. If my car was a four speed and I didn't have to figure out the throttle linkage I probably would have tried it by now.

Thanks for the replies guys. Runcharger, I've spoke with Chris at Classic Haulage and he said he had a round 69 air cleaner that will work with holleys. He said trimming of the vent tubes might be required depending on the model. The base for the air cleaner he sells now needs extra airhorn gaskets to get the height right with holleys but his next batch that will be released sometime in the fall will work with either brand. Did you have to run a metering plate on the front of the rear carburetor to make it fit? If so would make it be harder to tune.

Is it true that the edelbrock carburetors are a improved design over the old carter carburetors? Did they fix the problem of the fuel bowls drying out and making it hard to start? Would I need AVS carburetors or would AFB's work. I know the secondaries aren't adjustable on the AFB's without grinding the weights and the stage V intake using a direct linkage between the carburetors.

Barton spec'ed the Edelbrocks on my 528 with Stage V intake and heads. On a 71 Barracuda with rallye hood. The Stage V is 1/2 inch taller than the factory 2x4. I used the dropped base from FHO. They make a regular and a Shaker version (no lip, and lip) which gains the 1/2 back. But I lost another 1/2 or 5/8 using Schumacher mounts..

*** COMPLICATION alert *** Use the repo factory type fuel lines. They fit fine. (I have a new set FS, bought from Rick :-) I used braided lines which required banjo fittings to fit with the dropped base. In addition I had to file a nub on the carb because the hose to banjo nut interfered with the carbs. I can send photos if needed.

The lines I mentioned are identical to the ones on MickM's photo. The carb spacing on the Stage V is a little wider, hence replacement lines.
