The vacuum fitting will depend on the car it's going in.. Like, a Charger may have more nipples.. These are some pictures I have for reference for my '68 Hemi Charger...

Sorry to cut in but what is the green canister on the intake in your picture for? I have one in a box of old parts and always thought it was a california emmisions deal?

That small steel tube behind the motor connects with a short vacuum type hose to the nipple on the bottom rear of the air cleaner base. It supplies clean air for the choke down to the exhaust manifold to get heated before it comes back up to the choke housing on the carb. If you have power brakes, the large vacuum fitting on the manifold fitting goes to the booster. There is a smaller vacuum nipple also that goes to that green cannister like the picture here in an earlier post on the '69. If, like most, the green cannnister has been removed, just be sure that small nipple on the manifold fitting is plugged and use the ported vacuum on the rear carb for distributor vacuum. My late '68 Roadrunner came with the green cannister, but it had been removed before I bought the car in '76. It has the large and small nipple manifold fitting and the original vacuum lines that used to connect the cannister were still in place. Oh, and I'd love to find an original cannister for my car! The 1969 Parts Catalog describes the "green canister" as:
8-27-335 VALVE and COVER, Distributor Vaccuum Control, w/Manual Transmission w/170 Eng. - # 2843 299 w/426 Eng. - # 2863 739
I thought they were '69 manual transmission only, as the listing in the parts catalog suggests; but the '69 Charger pic above is an automatic. What gives? I've heard the difference between the /6 and HEMI is the mounting bracket. Frank mitchell has them listed on ebay from time to time.

If you do not have power brakes, the only vacuum line on the engine of your '68 HEMI Road Runner should be the vacuum advance for the distributor.

The green valve was also used on the '68 Hemi, both standard and automatic. It has three nipples, one goes to manifold vacuum, one to the rear carb timed port and the other to the distributor. In normal operation the valve lets the vacuum advance work as usual but under the high vacuum of deceleration it routes full manifold vacuum to the distributor. Full advance during deceleration helps clean up emissions. Here's one on my old '68 Hemi RR.

Back in the 60s'.. California had stricter smog requirements over the other 49 states.. And the green thing was in the vacuum line between the intake and the distributor. It would alter the advance under start and/or deceleration conditions. In 66 I bought a Belvedere II with a street hemi and had one on it for about a month..
I had a timing problem when I picked up the car from the dealer, and the lead mechanic had no idea how to time the hemi as the tune-up bulletins were not out yet.. He set the timing so it would at least start & run.. But not that good..
Got home pulled off and tossed the green thing, dropped in a Mallory distributor from J&S, set the timing like a traditional Mopar (36 total advance) and headed off to OCIR...

The green vacuum advance canister was part of the Cleaner Air Package for California cars; my '69 383 4-speed Calif Roadrunner had one, as did my '68 Charger 383 4-speed CA car. I don't remember it on my '68 383 auto Roadrunner that was bought new in Denver.
The '69 Charger R/T I posted isn't a California car. I don't think it's a Cali-thing..... Also, Carl's '69 is an unrestored car he bought off the original owner. He's had the car since I believe '76... So, it's definitely not a 4-speed thing either....

The green CAP valve was put on all 68-69 Hemi engines no matter which trans it had. There is a picture of a 68 HEMI GTX conv. in Car Life Feb. '68 road test that clearly shows the valve in place. I also have a picture of a NEW 68 Hemi Coronet R/T that was in a 68 vintage magazine that shows the crew replacing the fact dist with a Mallory unit and you can clearly see the CAP valve in the pictures. The mounting bracket is unique to hemi's, but you can use a valve from a 383/ slant 6 one and replace the bracket with a repro hemi one.
I agree..... I also see from the markings that the bracket was bolted in place, on the intake and painted with the motor. Then, the green valve was positioned and the "V" part of the bracket grimped around the valve...

I HAVE A NOS ONE IN A BOX WHICH IS GOING ON MY HEMI ROADRUNNER.it states that it is for both manual and automatic cars, they call it a USED CAR CLEANER AIR PACKAGE or vacuum advance control valve. it states when the engine idling in nuetral adjust the idle speed at 650 for automatic cars and 700 rpms with manual transmission. so now we are sure it is for both trans. carsit also is used on 6 cylinder cars as well 695rpm with auto.trans 745 rpm with manual.

"The green can thingy" and at least a dozen other names it has been given over the years... Time for another re-hash... same questions: 1) What years installed by factory? 2) Manual only, or both manual & automatic? 3) For all states?... Entire production run for each year? Any new info... I was told there were some recent articles in some Mopar magazines...??? Quote:

My 68 RR has its original green "thingy" back on and it seems to work OK. Second owner took it off when he raced the car but was a pack rat and kept everything - bonus for me... I've heard the usual stories from back in the day that those were usually tossed early on. The Factory Service Manual has instructions for testing/tuning and I seem to recall that mine was still operating as it should. These are some shots from several years ago when the motor was on the stand.
