Never liked the idea of that. I know Steve Morris had an oil pump belt fall off and found it only after making a pass. No damage was found on the tear down. He has been using an oil additive RevX and now swears by it. On a side note pertaining to belt driven oil pumps, did you know that Ford uses a belt driven oil pump in the pan on their 2.7 Eco Boost. Hopefully it's not too hard to fix and doesn't knock the wind out of his sails for too long. The thing that popped into my head is that if the race, the race car, and the driver's own personal safety all depend upon that oil pump belt doing its job, maybe a guy could figure out a way to protect it. So that if the alternator belt flies off or some other peril, that it doesn't take the oil pump belt with it? This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening.
