Met Malcolm back in 1972 and rode, raced and worked with him and his KTM dealership for 34 years. Loved that guy and what an amazing rider/racer. Rode with him in his last ISDT in Austria. Took this photo of him at the 1973 ISDT 2-Day USA Team qualifier at Fort Hood which was my first try to make the team. My brother-in-law, his nephew and my two brothers were camped out there at Fort Hood and in the morning my brother-in-law's nephew spotted Malcolm on his husky riding by and excitedly shouted "Hey that's Malcolm Smith guys look over there!!!" I don't know if Malcolm heard him or just looked over towards us and then turned and rode over to us? shock shock. He rode right over to us and the nephew's jaw hit the deck and he about peed his pants. Malcolm rode up and said "Hi Mike how's it going? Got your 125 Husky ready, it's going to be a tough two-day race." To which I said, "I sure hope and think so?" I was sponsored by the same team/manufacture Husqvarna on one of the company's first of three in the country 125 models. As I said what a guy, friend and racer. Malcolm was genuinely concerned that I was ready. I got a silver medal that event and finished second behind one of the other of the three Husky 125 ridden by 8-time National Enduro Champion Dick Burleson. But Malcolm won the entire event overall. smile up

A huge influence on the off-road bike deal, and from what little I recall, a fine man - may he rest in peace.

What a great experience. Thanks for sharing the story. I only got to meet him when I was young lad, at the Barstow to Las Vegas race, 74 or 75. I am getting to far away from those days to remember which years things happened. whiney
