I have a practically new set of comp roller tipped rockers. They are not the black ones they sell today but are styled very similar. They are steel and not bushed. I’m guessing the tip has roller bearings. The shaft looks new as well but it’s not banana grooved like I would think it should be. I’ve never had trouble out of my TA rockers and shafts and they are not bushed but grooved. Do these give any trouble? Should I get a better hardened shaft with banana grooves for the street?

First generation Comp Magnum BB rockers
- no bushings
- no roller bearing in tip, just a pin w/ a roller
- issues I recall people having were them galling the shafts with maybe 400+ PSI open spring loads
- additional grooves for the shafts is a good idea
- IIRC, some people had the fulcrums honed to add a bit of clearance, too

I don't know if Comp upgraded the shafts when they revised them for bronze bushings later on.

Steel on steel is just asking for trouble. The old Isky and Crane "nodular iron" are about as risky as I'd ever get. I think if you're determined to use them I'd want good oiling AND definately a "hard chromed" shaft.

Running a set I bought used many years ago. Doing a head swap this winter, and they look great. No loose wheels, no shaft or rocker body problems. I run 350-360 lb. open pressure and 20W50 Brad Penn oil. If they ever break or wear out,I would buy another set.
