Just get a set that takes H4 bulbs that are 55/65 watt. For the bright just use regular halogens. They actually use less amps thatn the OE bulbs.Had them in my 57 and they lite up the night better than most new cars.We have them in the 62 and 65 now.Rocky

Bosch makes a real good almost drop in replacement lense and housing that accepts H4 bulbs. I say almost drop in because you will have to rewire it to work and you may have to open up the hole in the housing a bit.
I've run thier 4 square headligh tsetup in my Diplomat for years, nice setup, worth the money, imo, especially if you do lots of night driving in the boonies like I do.
They say there are no such thing as a stupid question. They say there is always the exception that proves the rule. Don't be the exception.

I second the H4s. Painless makes a four headlight harness that uses you existing harness as a trigger. No cutting and it uses weatherproof relays.
its like $130 for that kit isn't it? kinda pricey for something so easy and cheap to do your self.

I thought I bought some from the local swap meet for under $30 each with bulbs. They are Autopal brand I think. Not Hellas. I don't think the round housings are super special unique between brands.
But the quality and thickness of the glass lens is.
$150 is a great price for all 4 E-code Hella lamps.

What other mods are needed to update my headlights?
I'll need a relay as well as ?????????????
Do I need to swap out the alternator?
I run a H4 bulb that is the same wattage as a stock halogen. I didn't change my wiring. Been that way for 10 years or so. Mine is just a two head light system though.

I use the stock wiring with my two Hellas, too, but I've inspected the entire harness and verified it's all in good shape.
Using relays with decrease the draw on your electrical system, how much depends upon the system's current condition. They are a good idea, but they aren't absolutely necessary if your electrical system is in good shape. If there's any doubt or if you're re-wiring or adding a new harness, by all means add the relays.
No need to upgrade the alternator, especially with the relays.

The sealed beam headlamps used on these cars originally were at best 15-20watts. On a four headlamp car, that is about 3amps for the low beams and roughly 8 amps on all four high beams. All this current passes through the headlight switch, dimmer switch, and the bulkhead connector using 16ga. wiring. Upgrading to a four lamp system with 55/60 watt low beam H4s and 55 watt H1 high beams will bring that current draw to about 8amps on low beam and upwards of 17amps with all four high beams burning. The original 40-yearold switches, wiring and connectors will not last long at that rate. Do yourself a favor and install the relays and run at least 12ga. wires on the secondary side.
