I'm getting my charger back this week after an accident last october. I rebuilt the entire grill, blasting everything and it's back on the car. I didn't put headlights back in yet. since the old ones got smashed anyway, I want to upgrade them to something brighter. I already have the diagram and parts for the relay upgrade, but my question concerns the lamps themselves.

I want to put a lense that will accept a bulb like newer cars. I want to know what's a really good lens and bulb to buy. I'm not interested in HID or xenon, or whatever it's called...to do that right is not in my budget at this moment and I won't half-azz it just so I can be the geek who has a charger with funny looking blue headlights that basically do nothing.

I'm just looking for the best lens/bulb combo to run off the relays that I'm putting in. part numbers would be nice too.
thanks guys.

Just get a set that takes H4 bulbs that are 55/65 watt. For the bright just use regular halogens. They actually use less amps thatn the OE bulbs.Had them in my 57 and they lite up the night better than most new cars.We have them in the 62 and 65 now.Rocky

Bosch makes a real good almost drop in replacement lense and housing that accepts H4 bulbs. I say almost drop in because you will have to rewire it to work and you may have to open up the hole in the housing a bit.

I've run thier 4 square headligh tsetup in my Diplomat for years, nice setup, worth the money, imo, especially if you do lots of night driving in the boonies like I do.

Don't be the exception.

I reccomend you go with Hella H4 conversion headlamps. i have 'em and love them, though I run the E-code (European spec) rather than the U.S. D.O.T. versions.

Lots of good info here regarding the different lighting patterns: http://www.rallylights.com/hella/Beams.aspx#ece

Here's what I would suggest you use: http://www.rallylights.com/Hella_5.75_inch_Round_Headlamps.aspx

I agree, Hella is the way to go. Picked mine up from Summit.

I second the H4s. Painless makes a four headlight harness that uses you existing harness as a trigger. No cutting and it uses weatherproof relays.

Is this what I need? looks pretty complete, high and low beam lenses with bulbs...hella's too.

the euro in the title makes me think maybe not, though.

That's what you want and not a bad price. I think I'm in to my lamps about $240.

I thought I bought some from the local swap meet for under $30 each with bulbs. They are Autopal brand I think. Not Hellas. I don't think the round housings are super special unique between brands.

its like $130 for that kit isn't it? kinda pricey for something so easy and cheap to do your self.

What other mods are needed to update my headlights?

I'll need a relay as well as ?????????????

Do I need to swap out the alternator?

To run any higher wattage headlamps requires relays to reroute this additional current away from the headlamp/dimmer switches and bulkhead connector. Recommend bumping the wire size to the lamps to minimize voltage drop as well. Fairly easy mod. and as mentioned there are premade relay/wiring kits on the market. I just reworked the original forward harness to include the relays and increased the wire size to the lamps.

But the quality and thickness of the glass lens is.

$150 is a great price for all 4 E-code Hella lamps.

I run a H4 bulb that is the same wattage as a stock halogen. I didn't change my wiring. Been that way for 10 years or so. Mine is just a two head light system though.

I use the stock wiring with my two Hellas, too, but I've inspected the entire harness and verified it's all in good shape.

Using relays with decrease the draw on your electrical system, how much depends upon the system's current condition. They are a good idea, but they aren't absolutely necessary if your electrical system is in good shape. If there's any doubt or if you're re-wiring or adding a new harness, by all means add the relays.

No need to upgrade the alternator, especially with the relays.

The sealed beam headlamps used on these cars originally were at best 15-20watts. On a four headlamp car, that is about 3amps for the low beams and roughly 8 amps on all four high beams. All this current passes through the headlight switch, dimmer switch, and the bulkhead connector using 16ga. wiring. Upgrading to a four lamp system with 55/60 watt low beam H4s and 55 watt H1 high beams will bring that current draw to about 8amps on low beam and upwards of 17amps with all four high beams burning. The original 40-yearold switches, wiring and connectors will not last long at that rate. Do yourself a favor and install the relays and run at least 12ga. wires on the secondary side.

What you guys are discussing can be used for a 2 headlamp set-up such as my Dart as well?

Yes, that's what I have on my '77 Aspen.
