I thought I shouldn't hijack the Mom's infamous 65 Hemi Belvedere thread so I posted this on it's own.

I went to Clay Kossuth's annual Christmas Party which is always the first Saturday in December and this car was there on display.

It's a factory 1965 Plymouth A990 car belonging to Paul Jansen.

It was at the party last year but only as a body, no engine or trans.

The Hemi was fired up two weeks ago.

Any information on the cars naming?

I seem to remember the A990 cars didn't have door window cranks, the windows were opened/closed by a modified seat belt and latch.

If I'm getting it right the story is that the Son got the Mother to co-sign when buying the car new not realizing it literally was a race car he was buying.

Love it! I heard the air cleaners are near impossible to find nowadays, even the reproductions produced years back.

There are a couple parts on the car that aren't correct part number stuff.

IIRC what he said was one were the carbs, they were correct looking but not correct part number.
He's working on getting correct part number versions but wanted the car running.
It has the correct distributor, the magnesium intake, it has K-heads on it.

The hood springs aren't correct ones, again working on getting the correct ones.

It's a lightweight car, front fenders, bumpers, etc are all acid dipped lightened.

He knows the whole history of the car and who owned it and when through the years.

His family knew the original owner, IIRC his Uncle was the one wrenching on it back then.
He has a picture of himself as a kid with the car back then and that's really pretty cool.

The body paint and interior took about a year (it was at Clay's Christmas Party like that last year) and the Hemi took a little over a year (he started on it in summer 2023).

The doors, fenders and most of the front-end bolt on body parts were acid dip but not neutralized, so many of those parts got removed later and replaced with stock parts I remember a spectator at the 1975 or 1976 World finals push his finger through the right door of Steve Bagwell's 1965 SS/B car thinking it had a spot of mud or dirt on it and he leaned down to remove it

The 1968 Hemi Darts and Barracudas did not have any acid dipped parts. They were stamped with thinner then stock metal. Bob Tarozzi who created those cars said the front bumpers were stamped with two pieces of metal. One piece was sacrificed and the other piece became the bumper. The doors were stamped thin

There should be no acid dipped parts on a factory '65 car, or any '64-68 Race Package for that matter. The factory had the resources to stamp thin metal, which has been proven before on the '65 cars. Now there were special projects that were acid enhanced...but in the case of punching out 102+ sets of '65 Plymouth fenders, hoods, and scoops...no way. Too much work required to dip, neutralize, paint prep, etc. for a 'mass-produced' race car.

The dipping - aka chemical milling - probably comes from the 10/15-inch AWB cars, which did get that treatment (IIRC, with one exception, maybe Flynn's car ?).
It was the tubs that were dipped; some of the parts would come from a donor RO/WO, some were shipped loose.
The dipping wasn't tightly controlled, so the cars ended up at different weights and strengths - not old photos of Landy's & Commandos cars buckling on track.
The post-dip neutralization was inconsistent as well - some of the tubs would continue to basically dissolve and/or rust.

Chemical milling was a trick for some time: definitely in SS, almost certainly in PS (and famously/infamously in TransAm), but was pretty secretive for obvious reasons.

Mopar use to farmout, sub contract ,all of their special drag package cars except maybe the 1963 and 1964 Aluminum drag race cars, both Dodge and Plymouths
Hurst did the 1968 cars, I'm not sure about the 1965 cars, sorry

The '68 A-bodies were the only ones not finished at Chrysler. The '63-65 and '67 cars all came down and were finished on the regular assembly line.
