I just finished my latest 46re overhaul.
From a 01 Durango. 360 magnum
I have redone a few but not in a few years.
Had a dealer buddy that was " the" trans guy for 25+ years to fall back on but he has since moved away.
He would set bands different than how the book said to. Instead of the "torque to 72 and back off so many turns" he went by how much "rock"/ free play the lever arm has. I forgot how much.
Anyway on this trans I put the sonnax /superior "super servos" in upon rebuild which may change things. Also both bands are new and I put the billet strut and anchor in the front band. Otherwise pretty stock inside.
I did change the front lever arm from the original 2.5 to a 3.2. (it's what I could come up with)

Does the change from 2.5 to 3.2 change the " turns out from 72"? (In lbs) On the front band?
Also this is the original trans from my Durango and it's going back in. I had a junkyard trans in it in place of this one for like 3 months and it croaked. Yet it looked for all the world like a fresh overhaul when I pulled it at the u pull a few years ago. Fresh machinery grey paint and all.
I do plan to dismantle that one and see what happened to it to kill it, when I get a chance to

I had to swap pans as I had put the original pan on the junkyard trans since the yard drained theirs by poking a hole in it.
I went to pull the original pan back off the junkyard trans to re-put it on this trans again/ and I looked at the amount of free play in the lever arm for the rear band and it rotated to where it had about 3/8" gap between the lever arm and the servo.
On this fresh trans I put it to 72 in lb and counted the turns out then tightened it up to spec and screwed it out the specified 2 turns out and I only have about 3/16".
I have more on the front band/ probably about 1/4" maybe slightly more but the front band says farther out, like 2-7/8 turns in both the 97 FSM and the ATSG book that I have. Again no mention of a different spec for different lever arm ratios but they did specify less turns out from 72 for a 47re and less yet for a 48re. Would this be because of different ratio lever arms in each sub model?

For some reason I've been back tracking and second guessing myself on this trans job more than I did even on my first 727 I did back in like 1987ish....
And that's besides the fact that I used to do them in one sitting or 2 at most and this one has taken me months, dibbling and dabbling my way thru it. I've also never had one that I have had to replace so much in as I have this one unit. Things like scored drum( it smoked the forward clutch) and a couple of pistons plus all the brass, all the electronics, and all the thrust bearings. All of them.

With the front servo you have, lever free play should be 5/16"-3/8". Hard to measure the rear free play, so 2 turns out from 72 in. lbs. is good.

Here are the adjustment procedures copied from the 2001 Ram maintenance manual:

ADJUSTMENT - BANDS
FRONT BAND
The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is
located on the left side of the transmission case
above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 73).
Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting
screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw
threads if necessary.
(3) Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in.
lbs.) torque with Inch Pound Torque Wrench
C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and an appropriate
Torx™ socket.
CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 is needed to reach the
adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 5 N·m
(47-50 in. lbs.) torque.
(4) Back off front band adjusting screw 2-7/8
turns.
(5) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten
locknut to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
(6) Lower vehicle

REAR BAND
The transmission oil pan must be removed for
access to the rear band adjusting screw.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.
(3) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns.
Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.
(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.)
torque (Fig. 74).
(5) Back off adjusting screw 2 turns.
(6) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
(7) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan
on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft.
lbs.) torque.
(8) Lower vehicle and refill transmission with
Mopart ATF +4, Type 9602 fluid

Pretty much what I did except trans is on the bench.

My questions were largely asked because of the changes parts I used vs stock. And differences in amount of free play in rear lever vs front, and also compared to another trans I have sitting here

The stock "controlled load" front servo piston rod remains extended a little after the 2-3 shift so it needs to be adjusted looser. Not so with the aftermarket billet servo pistons.

I remember reading about the difference between the stock original servos and what I put in but I've slept since then, don't remember what the difference even is anymore.
I put the same kind of front servo in the last 42re i did, this is the first time I put other than a stock own servo in the low reverse position.
