So, the heater core in my 67 Coronet started leaking and dumped about a gallon of coolant on my relative new carpet. What do you folks use to get antifreeze out of carpet? I have regular wet carpet cleaner and a dry carpet cleaner but I don't want to try either until I get some advice. May end up doing more harm than good.

Thanks for your help.

Wet dry shop vac. Suck, add fresh water (rinse), repeat. Leave doors and windows open and place fans in car to dry, you don’t want it to remain wet longer than necessary. It will be OK.

Likely soaked into jute padding - pull the sill plat & check - likely will need to pull carpet, rinse coolant out, and thoroughly dry it.
May need to shampoo to be rid of coolant & aroma.

Thanks for the input guys. I live in Vegas and we are in another heat wave. The mechanic that found the leak had the car sitting in the sun in 110 degree heat for several hours so all of the water did evaporate. But the oily residue from the coolant is still on the carpet. I will try the techniques you listed and see what happens. Good news is is that the carb issue is fixed and the car runs great. But my garage faces the afternoon sun and gets well over a 100 degrees in there whiney with no AC or swamp cooler. I'll get up at 5 to try to get some work done.

Way back when I used to detail cars we had a small carpet extractor machine that was good for stuff like this as well as removing huge ugly coffee stains from seats ect. It was the fallback tool when the regular shop vacuums would not get it done. Get some auto carpet shampoo and try a regular shop vac first.

You could also remove the whole carpet section and lay it out in the driveway and then work the stain with diluted Simple Green followed by plenty of warm water and that should do it.

I would definitely pull the carpet and rinse thoroughly with water then shop vac. 2nd pass, might try dawn dish soap diluted and rinse thoroughly again. Shop vac and Air dry before reinstalling.

Plenty of suggestions on Google. Might also try calling Legendary or Auto custom carpets twocents beer

Antifreeze can be oily, so dish soap can be a good first step. Mix a few drops of dish soap in a bucket of warm water. Work from the outside of the stain towards the center to prevent spreading. Rinse the cloth frequently in clean water to avoid transferring the antifreeze back onto the carpet.

pulling the carpet for cleaning would be my choice, as the anti-freeze residue might still be on the floor pans after one would clean the carpet, thus possibly leeching up through the carpet after it was cleaned.
i may be way off base on this, but it wouldn't be the first time i was proven to be full'a $hit, and it won't be the last, i'm sure ! biggrin
