Usually they tell you in the instructions if included to use or not use sealant.

Says here (*point 2) to use RTV with a fiber water pump gasket I just replaced not too long ago on son's car?

Oops I just re-read the instructions and it says to use RTV with a fiber gasket?

Take a good look at your sealing surfaces - after all these years, they may not be minty flat & smooth.
I'll generally use a light smear of wheel bearing grease, or Permatex #2, depending on the situation & fluids.
If I glue a gasket on - usually due to fussy installation or location - I'll glue it to the removable part.
That way, any subsequent cleaning or removal doesn't have junk falling into the engine.

I remember now I did use "International Gray" sealant and no leaks, no issues.

Silicone/Rubber gaskets get nothing unless the instructions say to.

I use RTV on fiber gaskets to make removal easier later and for sealing. Just a thin smear. Just enough to hold it to the part and coat the surface.

Exceptions are Tranny gaskets get coated with trans fluid.

And

Cork/thick fiber Valve covers get RTV on the valve cover side and oil on the cylinder head side.

Served me well for many years.

"This is what Permatex recommends:

www.permatex.com/products/gasketing...ermostat-rtv-silicone-gasket-maker-5-oz/"

I didn't read "big block Mopar" anywhere there.

Anyhow, I don't want to "make" a gasket, I just want to coat/seal the gasket.

Personally I don't think RTV and a cardboard gasket are meant to go hand in hand. I'm leaning towards the Permatex red stuff in the spray can. Wouldn't have even asked the question if I'd had the thing in my hand at the time.

The Permatex stuff both Dave and I posted is literally the best one they offer designed specifically to go up against glycol. You can make your own 'gasket' with it, or use it as a dressing on a gasket per #5 on the list on the webpage. Yes, you can use other substances, but they may or may not work as well as this one does in the long term.

Paper gaskets go on dry, with a thin smear around any areas adjacent to water that may show corrosion or pitting.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I use the above Permatex Blue on everything that touches coolant (intake, thermostat housing, water pump/housing, hoses, etc.). It's kind of hard to find it anymore in stores in the larger tube, so I usually buy the smaller tubes and have them on hand.

Shouldn't WHAT fluid the gasket and sealant are sealing against be considered?

Personally, I never put any gasket on dry anymore. If nothing else, I use Permatex's version of Hylomar. But never dry. If you have good luck with gaskets sealing dry, then by all means keep doing it. But I got broke of that a long time ago. twocents

Whoa, hold on
Permatex dropped that license years ago. Did they restart again?
I had to order a tube from England, but it is worth every penny.
