More info! If the brake and ABS lights are on there is a fault.

On my 2001 Dakota, like many Dakotas with rear axle ABS, if the sensor fails (or the sensor wiring fails) it creates an ABS fail code and turns on the Brake and ABS lights. Every now and then it clears, then comes back again. So, it could only need a new rear axle ANS sensor and not a ABS control module replacement. Also, on the Dakota, the ABS control function is built into the brakes master cylinder.

I'm not sure how the 95 works but my 98 with RABS only the speedo goes thru the electronics module getting it's signal from the sensor on the rear axle. My truck had an ABS light on only , no brake light , when I pulled the codes I was getting a bad power relay and shorted solenoid. I swapped out the module with one from a 98 1500 4x4 , different part number , and at that point I got the ABS and the brake light turned on and speedo not reading correctly. I finally found a correct part number module with the solenoid block on fleabay , swapped in the module and was able to clear the lights. Every once in a while I get the ABS and brake light after the intial self check , or the second self check after starting the engine, if I get it on the first I have been able to get it to go away by pumping the brake pedal during the second self check. I need to clean and swap in the solenoid block and then maybe send out the solenoid block I have to Cardone to have it rebuilt. Sadly the aftermarket doesn't support dodges but GM used the same solenoid blocks in that era but they used a different brake line flare so they are not a direct replacement with adapters ... which I haven't tried yet.

Brakes work ok so as long as I can go to the inspection station with the lights not lit I'm good to go.

This exactly what's going on with my Ram workat first the brake/ABS will light and then go out.But lately they (lights) remain lit.
I did a flash code on the ABS light, and it indicated a wiring malfunction. Long story short it was a wire connection just behind the fuel tank disconnected it and reconnect all was good up
Thxs for all who replies wave

When I first got the truck and had only the ABS light a long time mopar friend was doing my inspections ... 30 minute drive away .... and he suggested that if I had a small photo of my kids blocking the light that he wouldn't be inclined to lift the picture to see if it was blocking anything ... wink wink ... he knew of my ABS issue

I thought about that but I live in a state that does thorough vehicle inspections ... they take the car into the bay and do all testing .... and if the tester didn't see the red brake light come on when checking the E brake then he might want to dig into that further... luckily my 98 is incredibly clean for the northeast and the shop I currently use doesn't do the thorough inspections like they should be doing ...

over the years of inspections i have done, as well as had to go through, i have come to the conclusion that no matter how thorough an inspection is, or the length of time between them, some people can screw up so many things and go through tires and brake linings like eating candy. laugh2
