Getting ready to dyno a 505 with a big BDS blower. Going into a Pro Street type of car. More of a show car than a race car but the engine will make some steam with the blower. We'll set it up so it is well underdriven, but it should still make over 700 hp. Once they start building a little bit of boost the power goes up quickly. This one has TF240 head and a small solid roller so it would make good power even without the blower.

Looks awesome and it’ll be a lot of fun! Stock block? Do think the head studs will interfere with the header flange? drive

Will they be spraying any methanol into it to cool the intake charge?

Yes, stock block.
We use an ARP stud that screws further into the block so there isn't interference with the header flange. It is a standard ARP part number but it isn't included in the regular kits for some reason.

Any other pics of that oilpan? Static pickup? Capacity? Any other info would be appreciated.
I love the way blower cars come into power.

I have a 440+.030 with TF270 heads on it....Made north of 900hp on E85 at 12lbs of boost. I just need an intake and a blower.

Where is your damper?

Moroso dragster pan. Customer wanted it for some reason. I used the same oil pan on my 470 pump gas engine. It worked great with a belt driven oil pump. The pan has a single #20 pickup. It looks really trick but it is expensive.

Just built one. Or actually already a couple of years ago, but dynoed recently. It was a 4.25" stroke 440, Molnar crank, Molnar 6.8" power adder rods and ROSS custom pistons to get 8.8:1 CR. Would have wanted 240 TF hads, but at the moment they were not available, so picked a set of CNC ported RPM style heads instead. Not as good flow vise as the seller claimed, 298/204 at 0.6" in a local bench. Should actually probably picked the TF270's... Basic BDS 8-71 blower kit and a Scott Brown custom roller cam. The short block had regular machining done and aluminum main caps installed with ARP studs. Carbs were APD's 950 cfm 4150 style carbs. Didn't really try to seek the last horsepower, only tuned the carbs. The package made 9 psi of boost and the spark advance was 27 degrees. Anyway, it made 891 hp at 6400 rpm and 1039 NM at 4500 with a very broad and flat curve. Pump gas.

We also have a 240 TF headed Blower engine in our '70 Duster, but it's only a 400, with a 383 forged crank. STD B-length H-profile rods and Icon pistons for a 4.15" stroke 440. Pretty similar size cam as the engine above , 250/260ish at .050", similar block prep. The intake is a BDS built on an Offenhauser 2 x 4. This is a nice and trouble free package. Dynoed it only to 6700 rpm, but the peak should be at about 7200. The blower is a well used 12-71 running 10% under. Makes 9 psi, two 850 carbs, 8.7:1, could be higher with E85. This one made 818 hp at 6700 still climbing (8 hp/last 100 rpm) and 943 NM at 5100.

According to my experience, not much, maybe ten roots engines, they are at their best at low boost. The HP per psi added. After 10 PSI you don't really gain much with pump gas, the loses turning the blower are bigger and the heat goes up. I think with E85 you can go higher and still gain, it's pretty good at lowering the intake charge temp.

Andy will this combo be tested with E-85 or pump gas?

Customer says he'll run race gas in it so we'll use what he brings.

Here is a picture out of my Mopar big block book showing the difference between the ARP head studs. ARP has studs that fit under a header flange but they don't bother to use them in the Mopar kit. I don't know why, it is irritating to toss some of the bolts every time you buy a bolt kit and then have to replace them with a different bolt. I complained to ARP multiple times over the years but they don't care about it for some reason.

That is because you don't buy the correct studs!

I really want to do this with my car but nose weight, expense and having a huge lump poking up through the hood are all detractors. tonguue

Does anyone still make a magnesium roots?

Yeah I agree. The blower makes a bunch of extra torque and power, but it is big and heavy and expensive. Lots of stuff has to get moved around to accommodate the drive system and the combination is loud when you get it running.

Looks like a fun build. Wish they had the parts back when I did mine they do now. It might have been quicker smile And we have WAY better cameras in our phones now that we carried around back then too

Thanks to Andy, found the stud part number, it's AP2.725-1B. They're $4.43 apiece and you can buy them direct from ARP, I just bought 16, but think I'll only need them on 8 of the 16 outer studs. They don't list individual fasteners on the website but they are available and in stock.

That 505 should be a fun street motor with all of the extra torque from the roots, and guessing detuned to 700 hp in a street rod it should live a long and happy life!

GY3, I'm with you, love the idea of a roots or screw blower but really don't want one sticking through the hood. Think the next best option is a Procharger, and that seems to be the next logical step for nitrous guys.
