I hear that the new China outsourced 6AL's can be unreliable too, no first hand experiences though. I know a couple of racers who have switched to ECU ign's with dataloggers, F/I capability etc because they thought the MIC MSD was playing up. The old 6AL on the Barracuda is from the 90's and still working well up

Same, we've talked about this.

I'm looking for something better than the old rock solid analog 6AL and I haven't found it.

Too many issues with the digital stuff right out of the box!

Key word...OLD. I have five MSD 6AL boxes that are all from the early 2000s.

I've got non-digital MSD6 from them early 2000s. Maybe I should use that?

I use a 6A from the '90s, works fine with a crank trigger.

is there any way to tell what year MSD6A's and 6AL's they were built in ?
over the years, i have bought a couple of these things really cheap at the swaps, just thinking i would take a chance on the seller not knowing how to check them, or to use as a core to send in for repair.

I had a negative experience with 6AL. It ran fine, but when I installed my wide band O2 sensor it would not work... during troubleshooting I decided to try the wide band on a separate battery (I know that floating ground is an issue doing this but I was just trying to understand why the O2 was going crazy)... on a separate batttery the O2 functioned normally. Further investigation found that the MSD was back feeding a significant amount of A/C noise into the 12 V DC power supply. I decided to put a small capacitor on the supply to ground to filter out the A/C... but the noise from the MSD was so bad that the small cap was too hot to touch after less than a minute. I ended up getting it to work by using a cap about the size of a stack of 10 dimes...

I just bought a CB Performance black box that might work for you. It is a simple install, two rev limits, and you get to make a full timing map including start retard... and it is pretty cheap.

I'm totally jinxing myself but I've never had an issue with the old MSD 6AL analog boxes. I bought a spare just in case but I've ran them on several cars with no issues, and it's also good to hear there is no performance difference between a 6 and a 7, besides some of the additional features a 7AL2/3.

We have had countless issues with many MSD coils, boxes, distributors etc. We send them back for repair and it always comes back that they found nothing wrong during testing, (they actually repair whatever is wrong and send them back at no charge). Mainly, because they don't want to have a bad name out in the racing world.

I have the ole trusty Mopar electronic ignition kit on several cars still from the 80's/90's never with any issues with them.
