I just put together a 413 max wedge engine for a friend and have a question on rocker arms. It had a set of Harland Sharp rockers with the engine when he got it. I put them on, but what sucks is they are bulky, compared to stock rockers. The valve covers wont go on or off with the intake installed. Is there another brand rocker that will work and give enough clearance to get the valve covers on and off. I dont mind switching to a stock rocker they are just a little hard to find a good set. Anyone know where i can get a stock set or another solution.

Just for fun try slowly turning the crank and see if there is a spot where the rockers are positioned such that the covers can be wiggled off and on. If there is then mark the dampener for future reference and repeat on the other side.

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

440Source is supposed to have some ductile iron rockers soon.

the left valve cover with go on by spinning the crank and a little pressure on the cover. The right side go close so I popped it a few times with the palm of my hand but it will definetly be a job to get back off. I think the Isky or Crane either one would work fine but Ive never seen them for a Max wedge.

I guess I should ask the dumb question, do the max wedges use an offset intake rocker because of the larger intake port ?

Yes but im not sure of how much. Looking around on the internet shows anywhere from .210-.290 offset

I ran a set of Edelbrock Victor Jr. heads with stock valve covers and a 1963 cross ram. and they cleared just fine, you did have to bump the engine over if you had max lift on a couple valves, to get them off to clear the cross ram. I used Hughes rockers. HUG 15153 they have an offset don't know if they will work with max wedge heads.

Good luck with that, at any given time rockers will be insimilar positions - its not like they'll all be open or closed at once !!

There is no "intake" or "exhaust" rocker, there is only left or right. What is intake on one cylinder is exhaust on the next. So, all rockers have the same offset. What allows them to be used on either or is the shaft "hold down". The narrow one's let those rockers move in closer to each other so they center on the exhaust valve tips. The wider ones push the rockers further apart to center on the intake valve tips.

Copies of the origial MW - either will work fine.

As to the OP's issue, are you using studs or bolts to hold the valve covers? You would definitely have issues getting them off if using studs !!

Factory Max Wedge rocker arm offset is the same as all other big block rocker arms.

All the production Mopar factory ductile iron adjustable rocker arms are identical from 1959 to 1964, regardless of which heads they are on up scope
I'm thinking Plymouth used them in 1958 on the high performance dual quad one year only 350 C.I. motors work shruggy Maybe not, that was a long time ago confused

This DOES work with my stock covers, Sharpes, and a .650 lift. I do have to remove the alternator as it slides out the front. The hangup is either the number 6 or 4 rockers. Good luck.

I meant to say above that rotating the engine just right does work.

If you radius the bottom of the outer carb pad ears the valve cover can be pulled up straight before tilting. I ran Indy rocker this way. Covers came off easily.

He is not fond of the idea of grinding on the outside of the intake. So what is actually different on the factory rockers is it just the spacers. I’ve got a set of crane ductile rockers in my stash but didn’t think they would work. I guess I can pull them out and see what they look like

I’m confused, my 4 bolt covers came off straight up off head, I don’t remember the intake being angled back toward cover I think it had 1/2” clearance between them. Factory Max rockers with the 63 pedestals.

I couldn't remove the valve covers off my cross ram engine until I modified the bottom of the intake manifold. I just had to mill and angle on the bottom of the carb pad area and then the valve covers would slip on and off.

All the OEM stamp steel max wedge valve covers I've seen are not like the non Max wedge covers for the B and RB motors. they are a little bit taller and maybe a tiny bit narrower across the tops also. No clearance issue inside with adjustable rocker arms, unlike the stock steel valve covers with the stock stamp steel rocker arms and shafts work scope
My original 1963 415 HP M.W. car had 4 bolt valve covers that had the tab on both ends on the spark plug side for the added 2 extra valve cover bolt holes that Mopar added in 1964 work shruggy

Mine had stock covers too, those cast covers wound create an issue with clearance looking at that pic.

Any combination of parts that isn’t: factory iron heads, factory intake, factory valve covers…….will create(or solve) its own set of problems.

I dyno tested a 426mw based stroker FAST engine years ago.
Stock 286 heads, stock intake, stock 1963 valve covers.
The engine had a .680 lift cam and used HS rockers.
The VC’s could be removed, but it was a wrestling match……..and the crank/cam had to be at the correct angle to get them off(different position for each side).
The engine builder had worked out the positioning during assembly and had marked the damper accordingly.

I’ve also tested an engine with the stock x-ram, but using 440-1 heads.
.650 lift cam, HS rockers.
The raised port heads moves the intake father away from the VC.
Much easier to get them off on that combo.

The HS rockers are pretty chunky, and do add to the misery index.
“If it were me”, I’d make the swap to some Comp Ultra-Pros.
They’ll require a pushrod change.

I’ll add this……..
I’ve had a few sets of the repro MW heads here, the ones with the cast in stands, where the stands located the shaft farther from the valve than they should be.
Rockers would contact the inside of the valve tip.
I’ve had three sets here like that.
I’m not sure exactly if/how that may impact the VC removal situation, but I can see where it could have some kind of affect.
Might be better, might be worse.

Can you divulge the HP on the FAST engine? Or ball park
