Wife and I are considering leaving Vegas to somewhere different. Place is being overrun by Californians. And just going ways we don't like so much. Our grandkids and kids are mostly here as well so nothing for sure yet. But Tyler/East Texas is on the list. As are a couple places we have already lived, but Texas has alot of benefits for disabled vets which is a big reason we are looking there. So with the little bit of background looking for thoughts on the area? Lets say within a 50 mile radius. I know what racetracks are in the area, but what about other car related activities as well as other things to do and the quality of life.

My dad lives about an hour from Tyler in Lufkin, he and my mom retired up there from the Houston area. They like it a lot, it's quiet but still things to do and he's got his car buddies etc. They do a cruise night once a month in Lufkin as well. Tyler has a tad bigger scene as it's a larger town. Drop me a PM and I can give you his phone # if you want.

if you are talking about the veterans home north of tyler I think I would consider bonham, north of dallas as well.
from a practical stand point it is closer to dfw for any major medical, but still kind of in the far away from the city type of feel.
tyler isn't really a big city, and is kind of a pass through place on the way to shreveport.

No we are nowhere near that old. But are disabled vets and Texas has a lot of benefits for them. I am also a native born Texan and there are a few more for that sector as well. My wife still works but looking at slowing that down some. She is 55 I am 59, so lots left I just don't work for anyone else anymore.

Having been here in the destiantion city of Vegas for the most part a pass through sounds pretty good to me. We moved to Rural Ohio in 2020 to "retire" looking for a change of lifestyle. We had to come back here to take care of her father who has since passed. So we are looking at options. Having lived in the SF bay area, and DC, among other metro areas we are not looking for that.

My uncle lives on one of the lakes in Tyler. He's been there 10 years or more and seems to like it.

I don't know anything about Tyler specifically, but if that's the general area you think you want to live, there are a multitude of smaller, decent towns to consider just outside (or just inside) the DFW metroplex to consider.

Here's some additional, unsolicited advice: Buy a piece of property big enough that you (hopefully) won't ever have to worry about encroachment.
My Dad lives in Alvarado. Twenty years ago that place was the sticks. Today it's a suburb of Fort Worth...

Not exactly cool where we currently live for sure. Yes, it is a different kind of heat but I grew up in Texas and the midwest so I am not a stranger to the heat and humidity.

LOL I have seen that video before. No way in hell would I live in West Texas, not alot there that is appealing Cant see Midland/Odessa as a retirement type are. I was born in Tye.TX which is near Abilene. i guess since we have MB's maybe Dallas, but again no way been there done that. Why anyone would WANT to live in the metroplex is beyond me. Grew up arund the San Antonio are, which just keeps growing. Lived there in the USAF as an adult as well.

Any episode of king of the hill is awful close too ..

I lived Fort Worth for 15 years, I enjoyed my time there .. July and August can be a bit steamy, traveled all over the state. and Louisiana / Arkansas / Oklahoma .. Don't think I'll move back . always thought I would but it has changed a lot there

I had family in Tyler. I really liked that area. It's hot anywhere down there in July and august. Still have family west of Fort Worth in the Granbury , Stephenville area. Wife and I have been thinking about Cleburne. We like the small town feel but still not too far out. Had to change my post. West of Fort Woth, not East. Forgot to take my Prevagen yesterday.

I remember liking the "hill country", and the area around the Iron Resurrection shop looks pretty attractive from what little they show.
All I've done though with TX is to drive through it, usually in a hurry to reach Daytona or Sebring. Haven't been in TX for years.
My brother lives in Arlington, and he's had some soil problems, as has Feets.
