I'm not sure about the 1/8 mile requirements but I did have to have the funny car cage added to get my old S/P Cuda cerrted to 8:5 ET., maybe it was to 7:50 ET 25.5 cage (halo) only req'd for quicker than 8.50 (25.5 will cert to 7.50). For the 1/8 I believe it's quicker than 5.49 et and more than 125mph that requires a 25.5 (or 25.4) chassis.

My street car has a 25.5 cage certified to 7.50's. I absolutely hate that more and more of everything is going to 1/8 mile. 99% of the races are won on the better launch. Drag racing has always been and is meant be a quarter mile.

The 1/8 mile cage certs aren't set in stone. 8.50 cert will get you to around 5.30 Doug

This is what the NHRA has to say about it. So No not until you go under 4.49 (1/8 mi) - These are for Super/pro - Pro type Bracket cars. Class cars may have different requirements ROLL BAR Roll bar mandatory in all cars (including T-tops) running 11.00 (*7.00) to 11.49 (*7.35), in convertibles running 11.00 (*7.00) to 13.49 (*8.25), and in all dune-buggy-type vehicles running 12.00 (*7.50) seconds and slower. Permitted in all cars. See General Regulations 4:10, 10:6.

Interesting, I always thought it was done using 1/8th mile to 1/4 mile equivalents. For example. a 5.00 car in the 1/8th (7.9 ish 1/4), will require 7.50 - 8.49 safety requirements and a 5.50 1/8th (8.7 ish) would require 8.50 - 9.99 stuff. Only had a cursory glance but I can't find any mention of 1/8th mile chassis requirements in the NHRA rule book I believe all the chassis certifications below require a halo or funny car style cage 25.1 SFI Full Body Chassis Spec, Pro Stock . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1 year Adv. E.T. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3 years 25.2 SFI Full Body Chassis Spec, 3,200-Pound Maximum . . . . .3 years 25.3 Full-Bodied Car, Tube Chassis Roll Cage 6.50-7.49, 3,600-Pound Maximum. . . . . . . . . . . . . .. . . .3 years 25.4 Full-Bodied Car, Tube Chassis Roll Cage 7.50-8.49, 3,600-Pound Maximum. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3 years 25.5 Full-Bodied Car, with OEM Frame 7.50-8.49, 3,600-Pound Maximum. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3 years

Any certification quicker than 8.50 has a funny car cage. As mentioned around 5.40 Well I’ll never have to worry about that. Of course I could install one in my cage but don’t want it, way too many bars to get in and out of now.

My mild steel Daytona already had an 8.50 cert and a funny car cage. I paid to have it upgraded to a 7.50 cert and was told it needed four bars. The guy doing the work had it up on his hoist and an NHRA certification guy found 3-4 more bars that needed changed out because of rule changes which was fine with me. My blue heads up car is chrome moly and has a 6.50 NHRA certification

Alot of people don't like them, and I understand why. And there's several more bars involved to make one cert. When my mild steel cage was removed and replaced with CM I was going to add a funny car cage. My chassis guy and I discussed this but when he heard I'd also drive it on the road from time to time he said he wouldn't add it . He said in the street it wasn't safe. Not a problem as I won't go faster than 8.5.
Ok

Dial in bracket racing is lame and boring. I get that it has its place to make it fair for everyone regardless of vehicle or budget. I have just never been a fan. It's called Drag Racing, first one to the finish wins. Do you race? If so what class? How often do you get to race? My new car is intended to be a heads up no breakout car for all out heads up racing in the local northwest heads up no prep series that has around 5 to 6 races a year up here due to the weather and track schedules I was told earlier this year the promter may have stop proming those races due to having health problems in his family that need all of his attention, I'm praying for them I will take it put for testing and tuning and will probably enter it into some S/P races to get more seat and tuning time
