I'm in my early 70's. For past 20 years my eyesight has crept past 20/25 inching to 20/30, no corrective eyewear, and I have been driving trucks for over 50 years, but don't consider myself a truck driver but hold a Class A.
I retired 1/1/23. Eye Dr today says my eyesight has "magically" self corrected to 20/20. work
Never heard of that before.

Perhaps a second opinion is in order? Or can you tell a difference in your sight.

I elected to have Radial Keratotomy surgery in 1991.
Left eye is slightly far sighted and right eye slightly near sighted.
Over the last 30 some years I have noticed that both time of day and what you eat or drink affects near/far eyesight.

It would be easy for me to believe testing 20/20 was just normal variation..

In the last 5 years there have been repeated medical articles that a HUGE amount can be learned
about the rest of the human body organs and brain
by looking at the retina of the eye.

During this annual eye checkup intake interview, the assistant asked if I had any eye problems, and I joked I thought my vision had actually improved, which made no sense to me.
I doubt the nurse documented that comment.
It took nearly 1.5 hrs for the entire exam, and the the Dr unsolicited made the magic improvement comment.
He also noted common vision problems are related to eyeball shape and my was obviously changing for the better, but it's also very possible it will overcorrect at some point and my eyesight may then begin to worsen.
Getting old is such fun.

Since I drive 120K miles a year I have noticed my eyesight has improved also, I refuse to wear glasses, I believe that the test they use at DMV's is not adequate enough to weed out the people who wear glasses and still do not have sufficient peripheral vision to be driving a vehicle! I wish there was a study to see how many more people who wear glasses are involved in the majority of accidents, I guarantee you it will show just that! I wonder if the LED headlights are helping or hurting night time vision for the drivers who encounter them? Pretty hard to differentiate if the oncoming cars have their brights on or not... scope shock

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

About 20 years ago I started wearing glasses for distance, then after several years I needed readers, so I got bifocals. I hated wearing my glasses while working in the shop, the prescription for distance made looking at anything from four feet to sixty or so feet away difficult, tri focals helped a little but I still hated them. I just stopped wearing my glasses and used readers when reading or working on something close. When I did wear my glasses, I noticed that distant items weren't clear anymore. Last fall I had my eye exam, afterwards my doctor asked, you don't wear your glasses do you. I replied no, that things in the distance weren't as clear with them as when not wearing them. He said well, there's a reason, your eyesight for distance is perfect. I still have to use readers but it's great to not have to buy good prescription sunglasses anymore, just pick out what I like and move on.

I wear contacts because one of the many things that bugged me about glasses was when you had to look back over your shoulder your vision gets screwed up because your right eye is looking thru the left lens and the left eye is looking thru nothing , nevermind always banging the glasses in something hard when working in a confined space and needing bi or tri focal lenses .

Glaucoma can cause eye balls to change shape which affects vision. My sister was having that problem, but she found that massive doses of Vitamin C lowered inner eye pressures back to normal. Her eye doctor couldn't believe it was possible even when he saw the results. She brought the articles documenting the studys with her to show the Dr. He was amazed, said he would pass it on to his patients. Massive amounts of Vit C can give you the chits. When that happens, back off how much you are taking till the chits get back to normal.

I have one good eye and one bad eye. The optic nerve in my left eye was damaged from an infection almost 30 years ago. I didn't go blind in that eye, but there is only one specific point I can see clearly out of. And now that eye has a cataract. My right eye recently went thru "posterior vitreous detachment" and that scared the crap out of me. No warning aside from me getting old, all of a sudden one day, my right eye had a LOT of floaters and 'black snow'. I can see somewhat out of my left eye, but if I had to rely on it for all my seeing, I'd be screwed.

It's been about 4 months since the incident with my right eye, there is only one significant floater now, and the snow is gone. The vision wasn't affected and has remained consistent for over the last 7+ yrs.

I've been wearing corrective lenses since I was 5 and started wearing contacts about 30yrs ago.

Good news jcc. And at least if it does start to worsen eventually you're starting from a better point. And obviously the doctor found no disease such as Macular Degeneration which is common in older folks, so I'd so you're doing well! up

I don't wear any corrective lenses. I know the day will come if I live long enough.

Thanks, I have been grateful for my vision my entire life, and I cringe when I watch the many car shows online and see all the work and car stunts often without any eye protection.

Sounds like you are far sighted but you are starting to get cataracts which reduces your far sightedness and makes you vision better until the cloudiness of the cataracts outweighs that effect.
