Range Loss In 12 Popular Models

Recurrent compared the measured range of 12 EVs in ideal temperatures — “the temperature at which a specific model sees its highest average range,” which varied for each car — and below freezing.

The company specified model years for some cars but not others — an important caveat because battery technology improves regularly. Tesla, in particular, is known for updating technology during production, so two Teslas of the same model built a month apart may have different batteries.

Model ........... % Of Range Lost Below Freezing
2021-2022 Audi E-Tron 16%
2019 Nissan Leaf 23%
Tesla Model 3 Long Range 24%
Tesla Model X 100D 24%
Tesla Model Y Long Range AWD 24%
2022-2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Extended Range 26%
Tesla Model S 90D 28%
2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium AWD Extended Range 34%
2020-2021 Hyundai Kona Electric 34%
2015 Nissan Leaf 34%
2017-2022 Chevy Bolt 42%
2021 Volkswagen ID.4 46%

Some EVs use heat pumps to extend their range in the cold. That works in some temperatures. But Recurrent found it often works best above 14 degrees. This cold snap cancels it out in many parts of the country.

We just had almost a week of high temps at or below zero......be interesting to see those numbers. My good old gas truck started everyday without complaint. Lost a few MPG because of weather but I'm sure it wasn't anywhere near 30%. I also fueled up in the cold in a few minutes.

Yeah, the chemical reaction inside the battery really takes a hit in cold weather. Also doesn't work great in super hot weather. You don't want an EV if you live in Phoenix or in the northern Midwest or the North East. They work best where I live. Here in the NW the temp is rarely below 30 degrees and rarely above 90 degrees. EVs work great in this climate.

I consider this battery limitation a definite problem,
but you can always extend the range by driving an EV had a slower speed.

In an ICE vehicle peak MPG occurs in the 40 to 50 mph interval because of gearing and engine size.

But an EV can creep along at very low speeds without an efficiency limitation.

So, what you are saying is to just tell your boss you will be starting an hour later everyday just because your mode of transportation is a pathetic Singer Sewing machine. Got it.

Never, ever argue with an IDIOT. They will drag you to their level and then beat you with their years of experience

Yeah this is true. If a person is trying to get maximum range then driving an EV at 25 or 30 miles an hour seems to work the best. You want to keep moving but you don't want to pile up the aero drag. The difference between driving 55 and driving 75 is significant in an EV. You can watch the battery level drop when you get up in the 75 to 80 mph range. My Leaf will buzz along just fine at 85 mph on the freeway but the battery level drops quickly.

i think what he is saying is you'll just have to get your lazy A** up earlier to get to work on time.. smile

It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

"BEVs and FCEVs [fuel cell vehicles] come as a set with infrastructure," Toyoda said in a statement translated from Japanese. "However, one billion people around the world live in areas without electricity. In the case of Toyota, we also supply vehicles to these regions, so a single BEV option cannot provide transportation for everyone."

The chairman claimed that since the introduction of hybrid cars in its domestic market, Japan has reduced its CO2 emissions by 23%. Emphasizing the belief of "freedom of movement," he had a very stark prediction about the future of electric vehicles.

Boss, I am late because my dog raised his leg and began peeing onto my vehicle’s battery case.
There was a huge ZAP,
and I lost both my dog and half the miles of EV range.

Newest version of Nissan Leaf with much bigger battery reviewed.
Reviewer says only 60% range at 75 mph in cold temperatures.
Also says Leaf controls much easier to quickly adjust to.
