On Saturday I am going to go help my brother in law change the hub bearings on his 2005 Ram 2500 4x4. What tools will I need bring along for this? Long story but they have been out a couple of times recently so I am not concerned about them being tough to remove. I just want to make sure I travel up there(about 45 minutes) with the right size tools.

Thanks for any information.

here in salt country first you cross your fingers the axle nut threads arent rusted away to ruin your day.
then you need a good breaker bar,can of penetrating spray hammer and heat source . iirc 18mm and 1 11/16 sockets

IIRC, we used to take a die grinder with a cutting wheel to cut off the rusted exposed ends off of the bearing bolts, get those bolts out. Take a chunk of 4x4 lumber braced between the hub and frame, then use the power steering to get the hub broke loose from the knuckle (just moving), THEN pull or cut the axle shaft nut off and use an air chisel between the housing and knuckle to get the assembly the rest of the way out. Here in the land of salt and fancy chemicals to melt snow, I've had the bearing bolt heads too rusted to deal with and had to cut the whole housing apart with the blue-tipped wrench to get them off.

Ended up being a 1 11/16th socket. A friend of mine had a similar truck and had done them before so he had a socket. Job was easy since they had been out recently. Torque specs were more than I expected for most of the fasteners but no issues.
