Electroplating is the technical term and can be applied to non magnetic materials also. Think brass. It is different then vacuum metalizing used to "chrome" plastics. As for the original question I always assumed pot metal. Die cast was how they made pot metal parts. I could be wrong

I have a bunch of 68-69 Dart taillight housings I'll never sell and I just needed to figure out what pile, steel or alum , to include them in. running up my post count some more .
