I have a co worker who mentioned AARP discount for a hotel on a trip he took. I looked up age requirements for joining. Well, to my surprise, you can join at 18. Is AARP worth it? I am a veteran and think it said you get a deep cut on membership cost for that as well. I'm 47 and was wondering if it's worth it. I don't travel much, but never know if it may come in handy. What discounts and perks do you use most often?

Mostly the hotel discount when I travel while racing. they offer a lot of other discounts as well. They are big spokes people for the rights of elderly and retired people. The only drawback is the constant sometimes a few times a week mailings from them and/or their advertisers trying to sell you " AARP sponsored " insurance , financial advice, investments etc. I thought you had to be 60 or over to join but I could be wrong. It is worth joining however

I have AMAC, just like AARP but they spend their money on conservative causes. Not as many discounts but I just used them for choosing Medicare and have many other benefits. wave

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

The only thing I have is CAA (U.S. equivalent is AAA) . That said, I'm also 71 years old. Whenever I travel I always book online. I click each box to see what the discounts are and generally they're all the same and not cumulative. I've often checked the AARP box (despite not being a member), the discount is applied and nobody has ever questioned it at check-in.

All that said, looking at the cost of membership I think you'd pay for it with the savings from your first hotel stay, not to mention the other discounts!

I thought it was 50 was the cutoff, which surprised me. The reduced insurance offerings are the big perks IMO.

Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

I joined about 10 or 12 years ago mainly for discounted auto insurance through The Hartford. It wasn't long and they raised their rates higher than what I was offered elsewhere so I left The Hartford and didn't renew my AARP membership. They've been hounding me ever since trying to get me to rejoin but it's not going to happen.

What does it cost to join, and what are the annual dues?

$12 to join and $16 a year after that. Plus Veteran discount of 43% I think it said.

I'm a member but has little benefit for me. Not as many businesses that participate in savings as advertised by them. Magazines talk about senior issues/topics but are repeated frequently with just a new celebrity throwing same old same old ideas around. I work the crossword and out to recycle.
