Anyone here ever have someone purchase a home on your street and turn into an Air BNB? Different people coming in, renting for different time frames How did that pan out with neighboring homeowners? Any action taken against this such as
complaining to homeowner or going to the association or city about the noise, late night partying, etc.

Yes. Living in Ft Lauderdale, half of my neighborhood has been converted it seems. Unfortunately, Tallahassee passed legislation that hamstrung local officials from doing much about it other than requiring owners register with the City. Traffic, noise and everything associated with living next to a row of motels has invaded my single family residential zoned neighborhood. Ain't deregulation grand?

Air B&B moved into my neighborhood a few years ago and completely changed things. No more quiet Fri. and Sat. nights.Strangers walking around and coming and going all the time. The owners of these are getting paid to ruin neighborhoods. It's a joke but greed always wins. twocents

Y'know, ya gotta take the bad with the good. Just imagine the flip side - where you're in a community that has a HOA - and you can't park a trailer or pickup in your driveway, need approval to do landscaping or paint your house , etc, etc, etc..

I'd take that over a bunch of kids partying roaming around your property drunk, pizzing on your cars or whatever. Not that either is a desirable option.

I live next to a rental house, and over the years I've had good neighbours and bad ones. Living in a city (or suburbs), you are really at the mercy of luck. Neighbours can really affect your quality of life one way or the other.

Over and above all that, air b&bs use up housing for tourists or temporary partiers that could be used to house people. Where I live housing costs have shot up out of site while availability has been near zero - supply and demand has resulted in tent cities to the extent that I never could have imagined 20 years ago.

Property-freedom, for lack of a better tern, is a double-edged sword.

I loved my last place, basically in the woods of N Idaho, but:
Had to do the plowing & maintenance of the gravel road.
Nobody would ante up to re-gravel, and even dust-control was primarily at my expense.
Then a few years ago, a gal a few doors down took on a renter that turned that property into an open junkyard.
Everything imaginable was strewn all over the place, and there was no means of dealing with it.
One snowy day, he took exception to my plowing and lit into me on my property in an incoherent rant: F'n this & that, gonna sue over dust control, etc.

That was the last straw, and I sold the place and moved into a nice suburban neighborhood.
I've pretty much adapted to civilization again laugh2 but I do miss my trees and shop space.
But Life is definitely easier...

I've seen the opposite of the other responses here. A very good friend of mine has an Air BNB across the street from him that started roughly a year ago. Never had a peep of disturbance from the renters. Seems the folks that are on vacation are there to have a good time, not start trouble.

Wife and I are frequent VRBO users for or travels. One BRB I think.

Always leave the houses in fantastic shape, or even better. up

But there’s always those bad apples. down

Let's face it, you'll always hear about the horror stories but never about the rest. The ABB next door to you gets rented 52 weekends a year - 51 without issue and one good party. Are you going to praise the 51 times or [censored] about the one !!

Same here. One cottage in the back of a house was an AirBNB for years and nobody knew! Another house, recently remodeled, was used as an AirBNB and, again, I had no idea until some of my friends rented it (they were working on a job nearby) and realized it was on my street.

Of course, I prefer owner occupied, but at least in my limited experience it was been OK.

That said, I think we've been lucky. So far.

Being in BFE Idaho couldn't you just bury him somewhere? Plus I thought that is what wood chippers are for... work

They are all over the place here.

They make more money than rentals so long as you can keep people in them consistently. They do get trashed so the owners spend a lot of time cleaning and fixing things from what I have observed.

Back out of the driveway and run over the mailbox.
Lost their keys so they dismantle a window to get inside.
Stained carpet, clogged plumbing. ect.

Winter is slow so they sit empty for days vs nice weather so the money is inconsistent vs a rental. Then if someone destroys something you have down time getting it fixed.

Many houses that are put up for sale at stupid guy prices and do not sell get turned into these in the interim until they can sell it later.

Rhino, I can't say the thought never crossed my mind...

As for AirBnB rentals, I would expect a damage clause and security deposit.
But there's no telling with people: I remember campsites in my younger days, where instead of peace & nature, some moron would have his radio blasting.

Maybe in privately owned campgrounds where the owners or employees have no balls. But this doesn't happen in state or provincial campgrounds - wardens and troopers don't put up with that crap !!

Probably so in Canada - but that was in California, where being inconsiderate is a badge of honor.

I'm all for property rights which is why I'll never live in an HOA but these "Disrupter" companies, (Think Air BnB and UBER) roll into town and thumb their nose at local ordinances, specifically zoning. They are not subject to the established hotel tax or in UBER's case taxi permits, as well as rules about operating a business from your residence that generates foot traffic. They also take away from the available housing stock for permanent residents and drive up the cost of property while driving down the quality of life. Trust me, an owner occupier with skin in the game makes a better neighbor, along with a good fence.

yup. some bigger cities have stared to eliminate the the Air B&B. housing shortage went away, affordability has started coming back.

It's better to keep your mouth shut and give the impression that you're stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

A former 28 year old co worker told me he considers air BNB stays an opportunity to let it all out- be loud with out a care and just have a good time.
