I'm in the middle of building two 440 pump gas street motors for mild performance with power brakes and so on, not all out max power motors.
I want to use hydraulic roller cams in both motors but I'm not sure which hydraulic lifters are good now and not needing a lot of maintenance and will be quiet help
I wonder how many different makers, companies, are actually making them work help
All help and comments on what you used and the results are greatly appreciated bow up
thanks in advance: Cab

Can't help you with the lifters but what are the cam specifications you are using, the compression ratio, and heads you are using? Thanks.

I am running limited travel Morel hydraulic roller lifters in my big block with a Howard's cam. A couple of seasons with them, which comprises of about 60 1/4 mile drag strip passes, and about 5,000 street miles. I have the engine apart now because I put a stroker kit into the 440, and i plan to take the lifters apart, ultrasonic clean them, and throw them back together and into the engine.

Trickflow sells hydraulic rollers that i suspect are probably made by Morel - but I can't prove that. They just look VERY similar.

I don't know which lifters would be quiet.
I had a 511" RB built with Comp hydraulic roller lifters and they were very noisy. We ended up installing Comp solid roller lifters and they are quieter than the hydraulics, although not by much.

74 Challenger, bought it new. In 1978 I replaced the original 318 with a 446 and 727. Mild cam, Jardine headers, and Holley Sniper EFI.
New engine! 511" RB, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Eagle rotating assy, Comp hyd roller cam, Doug's 2" headers.

I had the same results with a set of Comp hydraulic roller lifters years back in a pump gas 426 hemi stroker motor I built for a local customer, nothing I did would quiet them down like they should have been puke rant
That motor sounded like a SB Chevy with the old .030/.030 Duntov solid lifer Corvette motors sounded like whiney

The pump gas 6 pack stroker motor going into a 1970 Supperbird will have iron 906 heads with between 9.0 up to maybe 9.7 to 1 comp ratio, 4.25 stroke with 4.350 bore.
The other pump gas motor will be a stock stroke 440 bored to 4.360 to straighten the bores up, it will have around 10.5 to 1 comp. ratio depending on what the deck height is, with a set of Eddy RPM heads. It is going into a 1970 Challenger 4 speed car.
I haven't decided on which cams to use yet, probably a Howard 723515-12 grind in the automatic car and a tiny bit bigger hydraulic roller cam in the 4 speed car, either a Comp Cams grind # 23-710-9 or the Howards cam grind # 728005.09 grind work shruggy

Trick Flow 21400011 lifters are repackaged Howards that are made by Morel.

There is some conflicting information here. When I called Howards cam they informed me that they used Gaterman lifters for their hydraulic rollers. Then I called Gaterman and he confirmed that he supplied lifters for Howards cams.

I wondered if some are made by other companies.

Following this.
I used the Hughes hydraulic roller lifters with the comp XR286HR-10 cam in the 505" 440, and the lifters sound loud, but in a roller bearing / sewing machine sound, not valve lash type noise, but that might be the roller thrust button on the stock timing chain cover?

Close to 9,000 miles on my Howards with hundreds of dragstrip passes.

No issues at all and quiet as can be.

A nylon thrust button is cheap and works well.

I believe Morel uses the same body for both the Hydraulic and Solid roller lifters, They must insert a solid "plug" in their solids to take up the space.

My issue is for smallblocks I would rather have a shorter (lighter) lifter body and a longer pushrod to minimize the effect of the bad geometry. For that reason i switched to the mush shorter and lighter BAMs

But on a big block maybe a shorter pushrod is actually better. I've had no issue with the Morels (who make the "house lifters" for nearly everyone)

The last Hydraulic Roller I built I used the early style cranes and I have had Zero issues in a big block turning up and just over 7000 and that on 2 different cams.

I'm following this as well. I'm running Comp retrofit lifters in my big block and while I could stand the noise at first, now it's just grating. To the point I'd be willing to drop $1k on new lifters to shut it up if that is an option.

I ended up ordering two sets of Howards Pt # 91774 after calling them to find out what brand they sell, they said those are Gaterrmans (SP?) Their other part number are Morels, I think that was what I was told confused
Anyone use them (91774) ? If so, how do you like them work Please let us know bow up

We use a lot of Gaterman lifters. He is a former Crane employee who opened his own business when Crane went under. Good guy to talk to, he knows a lot of about hyd roller lifters. Best tech guy in the business.
