So I get my Hot Rod magazine in the mail today. On the cover is a sticker saying in spring they are going to a 4 issue per year format. Of course they are talking it up like a good thing. Coffee table book quality issues.
Not sure if this have been posted here before but I'm kind of disappointed and sad to see the state of the magazine industry.

Especially hot rod magazine that's been like the institution of car magazines for decades.

They've been putting all their resources into digital media for some time now, and I'd say tradition there is on its last legs.
Of course, the way they crow about the hobby as if they invented it, they'll try to spin the move as quintessential hot-rodding.
Granted, when it was Petersen's, they did a LOT to promote the hobby and the industry back in the day, but so did a couple other publications.

For at least the last decade, Hot Rod has been a expensive Summitt catalog. 20 page's of captioned pictures and 80 pages of advertising.

If it went out of print, who cares.

I was a car mag addict back in the 90's, I got all of 'em every month. Read them cover to cover, wrote letters to them, they printed them, I loved it, had them stacked up like cord wood. Then the internet happened and car guys were some of the first to adapt to it in the very early 2000's. Forums, videos, interacting with other car nuts. Mags were useless and outdated in comparison. I am actually surprised Hot Rod has managed to hang on for 20 years.

I got mine this week and figured this sort of end was coming when Marian Davis died. I’ve been a subscriber since the 80s.

I still some issues going back to the mid to late 60's but nowhere near what I used to have. they started going downhill in the 80's IMO.

High dollar feature cars that used to be in the 'zines are now covered by Youtube channels within days of being done at the pro builder shops. By the time the magazine gets to it it can be old news if you have already watched it online.

Early last year, I finally had enough of the current editor's wet dreams of all things Corvette, and that C-10 of his.
So, I sent them a note to cancel my subscription.
Their response?
They added two years to my subscription.

Got to give them credit that they lasted this long.
I am not happy with the move, but better than going under,
It's a sign of the times. change will never stop, no matter how scary/unfavorable it may seem.

Car mags really pissed off the Mopar crowd during the 90s. I know I know the SBC motor and parts outsells Mopar probably 1000 to 1 and the manufacturers paid the mags to provide material accordingly. But Mopars still had a healthy presence and owners got soooo tired of the SBC 350 worship. I cannot imagine being an AMC, , BOP (Buick Olds Pontic) or even a 351 Cleveland guy. I'm doing a rust free Florida 1995 Dakota Sport 2wd mini tubbed street toy. Most of the cosmetic and performance parts once easily available have been discontinued years ago. But the S10 of the same era has everything still made.

Keep old mopars alive.

While that's a valid point, the fact is that tech is tech, regardless of brand. But, most magazines tech articles have devolved into "we bought this expensive part, you should too."

That's not tech, it's advertising.

Marlan used to be good and could often really get into the weeds. Love em or hate em, Uncle Tony and Ebooger get into the how's and why's. That's the stuff that applies to any vehicle anywhere.

I haven't read Hot Rod in years .. the only ones I have are from a friend who saves them for me if there is a good Mopar article which is rare. I used to read " Camaro Craft " ( Car Craft ) back in the day I even went to their Street Machine Nats a few times in the late 70s / early 80s . I miss Hi Performance Mopar ,( my Dart was in it back in 1988 ) Super Stock and Drag Illustrated , Bracket Racing USA etc. The last magazine I subscribed to was Hemmings Muscle News a few years ago but when it became smaller in content and at a higher price I let my subscription run out. Even National Dragster is only a few times a year now kind of a rip off when they charge so much for yearly membership

Yep, The hunting mags I used to subscribe to were the sam way. I let my HR subscription go several years ago when they were stuffing LS engines into everything.

Sadly, Mopar Action is the only one I still get in the mail. No longer subscribe to all the others.

I have Hot Rod Magazine issues dating back to the late 1950s - in excellent original condition ---- many issues with full tech layouts of the great engines being released in the 50s and 60s.
It's been a dilemna as to keep or toss ---- still have not decided !

The issue with the reintro of the HEMI in 1964 ---- some of the GM and Ford stuff --- the intro of the 340 in 1968 ....hard to dump those issues.

Like the women I have dated --- Always looking for a better deal ....

Nothing sad about that. I get that and a couple specialty magazines.

No need to subscribe if there's no content. At one point I had about a dozen monthly magazines but many started rehashing old articles, many lost content and just weren't worth it anymore. Funny that most were from the big publishers.

There could also be the demographics of the readers. Perhaps many are no longer interested in how things work and just want the parts list.

Cooking shows have similar problems. I used to love Alton Brown explaining why adding some ingredient developed a better finished dish.

Anything that is printed is having to compete with the internet and is loosing. I watched a documentary about how the news papers took a bid hit from the internet. The state of the automobile market is another factor. Not many people want to "hop up" their 4 door electric SUV.
