I just got the red Tuff wheel that used to be in my 1981 Mirada (RIP) back at Carlisle after twelve years, and the outer grip needs to be re-done. I know it's cheaper to just buy one of the repops, but this wheel has meaning to me...and it's red, which matches the car it will go into. Does anybody restore these wheels?

I've found the odd local upholstery shops who do odd ball stuff like that. Did you try checking that yet.

I tried to come up with a alternative to the rubber but under it the rim is like 3/8-1/2 (don't remember exactly) the rest is foam rubber that is molded onto it. If the rubber is not deteriorated you probably can find a leather "cover" to go over it.

I've reached out to them, look like they will be the choice. Thanks!

Cool! I was thinking of getting the one for my truck redone. Doing it in leather looks great.

What did it look like before? Did the rubber separate from the rod? When it does the rubber will "turn" on it. I have seen one of their replacement leather covers and they do look good! I would imagine they don't sell a do it yourself cover so you have to ship it to them.

Can the ‘turning’ rubber be fixed? Mine for the Lil Red is that way.

I’ve never done it, but it seems the fix would be to inject glue (maybe superglue….wear eye protection!) with a syringe.

A friend of mine was doing this very thing (super glue ) back in the 80's..
on a couple Tuff wheels he had in his possession. It worked fine.

I understand how important it is to restore something that holds sentimental value. If you're looking to restore the leather grip on your Tuff wheel, you could check out Von Baer. They offer leather products that might help with your restoration. Here's their website https://vonbaer.com/. You could also try reaching out to local car upholstery shops or leather repair experts for assistance. They might be able to restore the grip and even match the red color to your car.
