Trying to put gear oil in a Dana 60.
Not any room between the fill hole and gas tank.
I made a mess and didn't get much in.
What's the trick, funnel with a 90deg spout?

Thx

Hey, I use a transfer pump, pump. Small plastic pump that screws onto the bottle of lube. We use it on a lot of transmission (like my Tremec) that has zero room to fill. I think I got it at Harbour Freight. Works great. Jeff

I need to get one of these fluid transfer pumps to change the transmission fluid in one of our vehicles that uses the bottom drain of the pan to also fill it. It also works for differential fluid. Pricy but well worth the price over time. Summit and most places have them.

I want one too, but I am to cheap and use the hand pump like mentioned above

For anyone that believes the plug in their differential is the 'fill hole' & has lain under a vehicle trying to empty gear lube bottles by squeezing them while trying to get it all out...... There is a better way.

Close to 4 quarts added in under 6 minutes while on my feet.👍

The funnel acts as the bottle holder, but a round bottle in a round funnel cuts of the airflow for a good gravity feed. This is why it has a vent tube below the funnel.

Just elevate the fill side of your axle tube to make sure the gear lube flows towards the center.

This was an earlier version, too slow without the added vent tube on the one above.

It also illustrates a real life example of just how versatile a 4-door can be! up

I just pusha a tight fitting rubber hose over the "tip" on the gear lube bottle, put the other end in the fill hole, turn the bottle upside down and squeeeeeeze the bottle, forcing the oil uphill. You won't be able to empty the bottle that way...just put the excess in the next jug.
Good enough for me....

Thx for the replies. I picked up the $10 HF transfer pump and a $5 90-deg 3/8" brass fitting at Lowes.
Worked ok, but the HF pump has a screw on cap larger than the gear oil bottle.
So I had to cut down the bottle enough to fit the pump inside. So the process worked with a little bit of a mess.
Need to find a small bottle with a screw spout to match the pump for next time.

Or the Fat Mike's method just might be easier.

Pour the gear oil in an old anti freeze or oil jug. Drill a 3/8" hole in the cap. insert a 3/8" metal tube that goes to the bottom of the jug. Bend the tube at the top 90 degrees so that will fit in the fill hole. Poke a small hole in the handle area of the jug. Point a blow gun near the hole. If you get to close the jug will start to bulge. The pressure forces the oil up the tube. DO NOT put the blow gun in the small hole. It sounds hokey. But works pretty well.

I have had one similar to this for over 40 years

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

I had to jack the body of my 69 Charger up letting my S60 hang, it was easy to get to the filler bolt.

IF this is a refill after pulling the cover for service, put the full load of gear oil into a baggie. Stuff baggie into housing. Reseal cover.
Drive it. The gears will turn the plastic bag back into oil.

WOW, that's interesting. Never hear of that trick before, but sounds feasible (I guess). work

Yup...same here, used this for both emptying and filling back up the good ol' banjo!

Having said that, for my 2020 STI I picked up the gear oil in the flexible containers that you can actualy roll up. Haven't done the maintenance work yet (tomorrow if the weather holds up?), but at least that container style appears to give you a little more leaway with fitting it all.

Worst case, if that doesn't work out will come the above mentioned pump and I'll go down that route.

While the deed is done i use this.

It was in the marine section at Walmart for filling the outboard foot with oil.

Fits a quart size oil bottle perfect.

At work I just poke a small hole in the top of the bottle and used compressed air and a rubber tip blow gun. The nipple off the bottle I cut so I can squeeze a clear vinyl hose through the opening so it’s tight enough to seal.

Saw the Valvoline bag, neat idea, but I’m too cheap for that.
I need to find a plastic bottle that the HF pump will screw onto.
