Just wondering what paints have worked pretty good for both the black paint on chrome
And the whitish paint on plastic lense.
Any tips in prep appreciated too.

Im faced with a similar issue on a project. Inline tube markets a silver paint pen/marker that ive thought would work good on the tail light outline. Isnt it silver vs white? Its worked good for many I know.

On the bezels you can tell there was zero prep and oem lasted a long time. Ive thought about trying some simple non rattle can enamel on a clean surface test bezel and see how well it works or if needed scuff the chrome and try maybe an epoxy primer then the black.

If we think about it they had a simple template they over layed and sprayed.... NEXT.... If it were a nice car with hand washing and kept inside id almost consider the simple route like the factory did.

I myself would not use rattle can paint.

I wonder how vinyl wrap material would work. Might check with a shop that installs vinyl wraps and sign work.

With the black, I looked at it and thought flat black bbq paint would work, but I too am leery of that thought.
It seems too simple.

The black BBQ paint is more of a high temp paint. Ive used it on some parts and it does not come from the can as it shows on a BBQ grille until after a couple uses. Ive used it on beater exhaust systems.


Might be worth a try on a test part.. who knows. I might have some on hand and have some old junk bezels... if so I will clean and shoot one today just for kicks.... I need to sort this out myself as well.

Well go figure... I have some and its been a few years but I went and hit my BBQ grille and it does spray flat.

I will clean a old bezel and do a test today and when dry see how durable it seems. One side I will do bare, the other I will scuff with fine. Im not a rattle can fan at all but my use is on a old caged race car that sits indoors so perfection or high cost isnt needed.

Might check back tonight and see how it went.

I have used the chrome / silver paint pens from craft stores on the raised edge outline on the lenses and krylon semi flat black spray paint on the bezel. That paint looks pretty darn close. I use it for lots of stuff. Polished the lenses with mother mag wheel polish.

I didnt think the grille paint would stick well and it seems like it dont. I cleaned the other side and hit it with self etch primer and and in a few will use flat or semi and im sure it will hold well.

I masked them and used cheap rattle can satin black 32 years ago on mine, still look good and black.

for the silver on the lens, could use testor's model paint, or find a silver brush on touch up paint....

There's a chrome pen for model-making at Hobby Lobby for about $8 or so.
I use it in model making.
Doesn't stand up that well to being handled unless you spray some clear over it.
But it's pretty easy to do, and I'd recommend a tip wider than the actual raised surface forgetting the straightest lines.
As for the blackout, the trick is getting paint to adhere to chrome plating.
I'd mask (with the 1/4" blue plastic tape), scuff, re-mask, prime & paint.
I like the wrap idea, though.

On the test part I did I roughed up area with folded 120 da paper and Rust-Oleum semi gloss and 24 hours later.... its on there for a long time. On the test bezel I mentioned it was hard to scratch with an ice pick. Im sure the Krylon would do the same.

I was shocked but then again its made for bare metal. It adhered better to the scuffed bare metal then the area I used etch primer on.

Nice to find a simple easy fix.

Scratch n prime or other prep?

I just checked it this am... the one I just scuffed with 120 da paper by hand and shot with rusto on bare metal I can not leave a scratch with my fingernail as hard as I tried.

Of course after I sanded I cleaned with rubbing alcohol before tape and paint but it seems the simple way is the best way, at least for me.

The area I primed then shot scratched off to show the primer.

So im just going on scuffed/cleaned bare metal.
