Guys...I think I need a new master cylinder for my 69 GTS 340. It has manual drums on it. The old one looks to be a 70 and on up. The pedal does not return all the way up...Ideas please..

They typically have part numbers cast into them on the bottom?. That would help us identify what you have.

If you want the correct number one for the car you may have to get an original and have it serviced. Otherwise one from the parts store for a drum brake application should plug right in.

If the car does not stop all that amazing you could also put some front disc brakes on it vs spending money on a drum master cylinder only to have to change it back out later?

Almost all the drum brake master cylinders in the mid to late '60's seem to use the 2808606 repair package. I've had good luck (so far) rebuilding them with this equivalent kit:

I thought the GTS trim package included the front Kelsey Hayes 4 piston disc brake package twocents scope
I know several well known factory sponsored drag racers that got free GTS and Formula S Cuda given to them to drag race them at their tracks back then, They all removed the disc brakes and put on either the 9 inch or 10 inch drum brakes on their cars to help with weight reduction and traction on those cars, NHRA never said anything about that until several years later rant whiney shruggy

Only in 1967 were the big block GTS's and Barracudas manual 4-piston Kelsey Hays brakes. In 68 it was 4 wheel 10" drum with disc and power disc optional. The only rebuild master you can buy at all the parts stores nowadays are the 70-up Cardone with the wire cap hold down. Like said above, find a good core and get the rebuild kit, I have several originals laying around because of this...

Back in the day the discs were commonly removed on drag race cars to alleviate the pad drag. Drum brakes could be loosened to the point of no drag to gain and additional .01-.05 reduction in ET. hey every little bit helps whistling but we also had brake linings that worked well on drum equipped cars. beer
