Oh
So, I was installing a new distributor in one of my cars yesterday. Makes me feel better to roll the motor over to TDC, just in case something happens, I know where the motor is at. I stab the distributor in and turn it over. I hear a small noise but, nothing too concerning. I get out and put a little more advance in it and fire it up. Let it run for about 20 seconds, get out of the car and put a timing light on it to check quickly while letting it warm up. I look down and notice that my fan and clutch isn't turning, so; I quickly shut the car off.

Oh, gosh, I forgot to take the half inch ratchet and socket off the crank bolt before firing the car. The ratchet was stuck between two of my fan blades. I reach down and there is no bolt head where the crank bolt goes. At first, I'm thinking something snapped; I hope I didn't booger the crank up. I get down on the floor and find that the crank bolt simply backed out and is still in the socket, which is laying on the k member. No threads are messed up and there are no marks on any of the tools or really anything on the car. One fan blade is slightly bent and that's it. That could have been really bad.

Put the crank bolt back in, set the timing, and took the car out for a long drive; all is good.

This made me think, there has to be some good stories out there of bone headed moves.

I have a few more I can think of, when I worked for some shops. Guy lets original paint mid 80's Mustang down off the jack with the door open, and jack stand right under the door. It crunched the door pretty good. Another guy had a trunk lid open, when closing it, he forgot to remove the butane torch from the trunk gutter and the back window shattered. Prep guy in the paint shop backs a freshly painted van out of the building and backs into another freshly painted car. Guy reinstalling under hood mat on freshly painted, brand new hood; clips are too long and put out-ee dents in the hood.

Anyone care to share some of their not so bright moments or those of others you know?

Many years ago I left a rag in the valley when I was installing a new intake on a small block. Finished it and stood back to admire my handy work, wanted to wipe my hands then realised where I'd left it. I've done other dumb things like leave spark plug sockets on spark plugs, sump plugs out when changing oil, leaving tools in the engine bay, left my helmet at the pit and only found out when we got called to stage etc etc blush

Been there, done that...Mine usually spits the wrench out across the garage....Never had it spin the bolt all the way out.

My favorite was changing the oil in my boat. Changed it using one of those pumps that pull the oil out of the dipstick tube with a long skinny tube. New oil in, fire it up, all is well. Cleaning stuff up and getting ready to take it to the ramp . Tube is nowhere to be found. Then it dawns on me that maybe I never pulled the tube. After about an hour, decide to drop the pan which isn't any fun in a boat. Sure enough, the tube is safely wrapped around the crank. Somehow I was able to unwind it and made it out on the water later that day.

Back in the 80's, a buddy and I towed over to Tri State in Ohio with my 340 Dart. First pass, it blew a head gasket. He starts tearing it down while I go into town looking for a head gasket. Luckily, I find the same one I was using. As we're getting it back together, a spark plug gets broken. My truck had a 360, so I just robbed one from it. Everything was going well until it wasn't. A piece of ring gear came off the converter and among the damaged items was the battery cable at the starter. We were dead on the track. They said they didn't have anything to get it off the track, so I had to go back and get my truck and trailer. I just set the ramps up on my open trailer, put everything that was on the fender ( from the gasket job) on the ground and hopped in the truck. When it starts, I hear pop, pop, pop,. SOB. That one spark plug is in the car. Now I'm looking through all the stuff I put on the ground for the broken spark plug so I can at least have something in the hole. I go get the car, and as we're heading back to the pit spot, we see the car is now smoking. We stop and jump out and can smell it's an electrical problem. I'd put the battery in the trunk, but no disconnect. I don't know if it was required then, but I didn't have one, yet. It had a stud top battery in it and I'd done a great job of making the cables. I needed a 9/16 wrench, but it's all back at the pits. It's starting to smoke pretty good and I'm trying to tear the cable off the battery. I finally get it and we get back to our spot. The ring gear had not only severed the battery cable, but stuck into the frame rail creating a really good dead short. Oh, the good old days.

One of the many, I was changing carb on my 340 Dart. When I got done I fired it up with a remote switch under the hood. It fired and instantly went to the sky so I grabbed the coil wire to kill it. Luckily for me the wire came out of the cap instead of the coil and I was electrified. It seemed like it took 5 minutes for that motor to stop from 6000 rpm.

I did the wrench left on the damper bolt in the Valiant this spring. Luckily it flew off and didn't go through the aluminum radiator.

Certainly not my dumbest, but I don’t have much room between the crank bolt and radiator. So I have to put the socket on the bolt first then I have to use an extension that’s just the right length put into the socket. Reverse the sequence when done, and of course one time I forgot the socket on the crank bolt blush drove around for about a day before I realized it was still there

Boy are you lucky....

Years ago, I recored a motorhome radiator for a guy who was leaving in a couple days for a vacation trip out west. He went home and put the rad back in, replaced the cap, rotor, plugs and wires and somehow got it out of time, left a half inch breaker bar on it, and naturally, it fired right up and wiped out the new rad, fan shroud fan and ripped the trans lines off of it.....

2 days before they were leaving to go on vacation. eek

To this day I still think about that every time I am turning a engine over with a breaker bar in the car.

Granted my car had years and years on the gearset but mine broke after a string of 10.90 runs. I was running a radial though and had a few tire hop instances that didn't help. But I knew better than to put any money back in the 8.75 and I went Dana.

I was 14 and pop had me change water out to put in the anti-freeze. Opened petcock on radiator to drain it, didn’t shut it off afterward and ran 2 gallons of antifreeze on ground. I had to buy the next two gallons from my allowance. But dang I remember to shut that thing now after 60 years.

Many years ago going thru the trans in my street car. Assembling the pump when my wife calls me in for lunch. I decide to leave all but one of the bolts holding the reaction support in just a few threads. That way I will see them when I come back out and tighten them. Car backed out of the garage about 20 feet. Then it wouldn't move. Leason learned.

Yep always happens when you walk away DVW. Whatever I am working on gets finished before I walk away. Phone is another bad one. I let it ring and call whoever back.

I tell guys helping me on car, if the garage catches on fire, you finish tightening up whatever you are working on, THEN run out of the garage lol.

It almost got me years ago with wheels that were not tightened up.

Ohhh, these are all good...but...

So I was done restoring my coupe, managed to get it through the start-up, needed to do some fine tuning and in this particular case I had to remove the Carter TQ carb from the intake to re-jet.

Seeing as the carb was already off I figured I might as well do a quick cranking compression test...well, of course I didn't want "da beast" to all of a sudden start on me (didn't know if it would, but the intake runners had some fuel in them already, and well, I figured it was best NOT to let a spark near that fuel as I was worried about a run-away engine hitting sky-high RPMs with whatever fuel was in there already!!!). So I pulled the coil wire out of the distributor cap (can you spot the potential problem here yet??? LOL) to prevent the motor from coming to life!

Yeah...well, at that moment I didn't see anything wrong with THAT particular approach...so off I went to crank it a few times, and KAABOOOMMMM, before you know it I have a major BBQ going on in my engine bay...yikes!!!panic

The car is half-way in the garage (all of engine bay is) so the flames are fairly high and in that split second I'm thinking the whole place will catch on fire!!! I grab a rag thinking I can smother the fire...ha, amateour...the flames are getting bigger not smaller...nothing like feeding the fire more O2 idiot!

I make a mad rush for the water hose, which is on the spool attached to the house, haul my ass back to the car and hose everything down, fire is put out. I literally walk away from the car, grab a cold brew (of which I had NONE prior to this event) and empty the 0.5L bottle in just a few seconds.

The root cause: removing the carb left the fuel line completely open, and the dangling coil wire just hanging there of course still needed to let the electric charge out somewhere...yeah, like towards the fuel that the mechanical fuel pump was dumping out on the intake manifold as I happily cranked the motor over a few extra times to get "a real good compressoin reading"!!!

It took a couple of weeks to re-do some of the wiring (which I completely stripped down and re-taped). No serious damage otherwise, but man, my nerves were tested, I honestly though I was about to see nearly 10 yrs. of work go down in flames (literally).

Starting the car while under the hood forgetting it was in reverse and to really make it fun the drivers door was open and caught the steel beam of the shop and made the door fit flush with front fender. After clearing the shop it came to a rest since my visiting mothers new caddy was just in the right spot to catch it. confused I can claim ignorance and youth if that helps.
