You ain't kidding. And due to shortages I bounce around a lot which is even worse.

Work on enough race cars, and Night Shift is what starts after 10-12 hours of daylight...BTDT.
Got a couple funny stories about those thrashes as well...

But I respect the folks that do odd shifts on their jobs - closest I got to that was managing an AutoZone store.
Upper Management will have you close after 9 PM and open at 6AM next day.
That stare is real !

Back in 2002/2003 I worked straight nights, and it worked out for me because I flipped my life around to accommodate it. Hours were 11pm to 7am, I'd get home around 8, shower up and change, then go run errands, get food, work on the car etc until around noon. Be in bed by 2pm and sleep until 10pm and then head into work. IMO the worst shift was afternoons, you're living in no mans land. Wake up nobody home, get home from work, nobody home and nothing even open because its the middle of the night.

Me too, back in the day from '68 to the mid '70's I worked 11pm to 7am (3rd shift as they called it) five days a week. It was actually better than working 3pm - 11pm or 3:30pm-12am (2nd shift) for a young guy as all you could do once you turned 21 was close the bar at 2am with the rest of the drinking co-workers and then sleep it off until 1pm or 2pm the next day and get up and go back to work. Never had enough seniority to hold a steady 1st shift of 7am - 3pm so I volunteered for 3rd shift when they had it which was most of the time. A funny thing happened one Saturday morning around 7:15 am sitting in my '69 Road Runner tired and not really knowing what was going on at a traffic light and sort of feeling like that cat.

I've been on 12 hour nights in the ER since 1992. No way would I switch. 6 12's in a row and 8 days off. Just left a job after 19 years because they could do the 6 in a row. 2 days on 3 days off 4 days on doesn't work for me.

Some people absolutely love it, others can't cut it for more than a few days. I worked exclusively nights/ 3rd shift for 15 years. The job was decent, but I always hated the hours. I was a very active individual who was into health and fitness, so I managed to stay good there, but my social life- pretty sad. Always working for the weekends.

One reason mines work ā€œhoot owlā€ shift
is that unreasonable government inspectors show up on Day shift.

I have worked all the shifts.

Knowing more now after unpleasant classes in ā€œThe school of hard knocksā€
Third shift should end well before sunrise, maybe 4 AM,
and it is not unreasonable to allow 30 minute naps.

Undeniable data has built up that third shift workers end up with more health challenges

My job was a 'third shift' too. I loved it at the time because Friday morning started my weekend and Sunday night started the week, so it felt like I had a three-day weekend.

From what I was told and what I've seen, 8 hr overnight shifts have pretty much gone the way of rotary phones. One of the first jobs I had here in TX was a 12hr overnight, that SUCKED. Between drive time and them expecting you to stay an hour over to prepare for the next shift, I was looking at a 15-16 hr work day. I didn't last a week. I won't even consider a swing shift.

The last 12 years it has been a rotation every month, 1st shift to 3rd shift to 2nd shift, 3rd shift month was a throwaway month for me the only way it worked for me was if there was weekend work just do 30 days straight on night shift so I could stay on a sleep schedule, we had so much turnover that we went to straight shifts and I am on day shift only and I feel so much better and get so much more accomplished at home. I could do grave but not Swing. Did a 12 hour 3 days on 4 days off, the following week was 4 on 3 off. The bad part was the start of the week was always on the weekend so one way or another the weekend got hosed. But I sure liked having the 4 days off wink

In the late 90's I worked at a tier 1 Toyota supplier plant, we made painted running boards that were put directly onto the vehicles. It was afternoon shift 4-10's. Week started Monday at 3:30pm-1:30am and was over once your Thursday shift was done. You had Friday, Saturday and Sunday off. That was ok but just because all my co-workers were so good, it was still "no mans land" after waking up and going home each day.
