Well I did but this was by old back in the '70's insurance records of a Road Runner I owned and no luck. I was thinking that it might be possible if the records were from the '80's or '90's but maybe someone knows n_a_c ? wink.

Probably not but I thought it was worth a try when I went looking for the VIN of my '69 RR I bought new in '69 and had it insured by Erie Insurance and my cousin's husband was our family's insurance agent. He and his son contacted everyone they knew at corporate and their records did not go back that far to the late '70's when I sold it. All I wanted was the VIN but no luck. I even tried to see if my parents had old insurance records or bills or registration but no luck there either. Just throwing it out there for anyone trying to find an old car they owned as another way to search for it or at least the VIN. Old insurance records with the VIN may be worth the search with family or at home?

No insurance company is going to provide any information, even if someone had the vin or has old paperwork. Doing so would get an employee fired immediately.

Typically, the only VIN info that is retained would be related to a prior claim, but to search that, they’d need the VIN itself, along with a reason to search those records. Every insurance company you can think of tracks each keystroke. They also can tell who accessed which information and when. Many, including my employer, will also flag anything that looks suspicious, such as someone accessing a system they typically would not, or accessing very old information.

^^^ Oh hell yeah - nobody polices their staff like an insurance company...I'd wager that banks come closest, but not as ardent.

Do you still have the VIN?

I always recommend going to this group on Facebook. VIN isn't mandatory, but it helps...

Actually, I think the government actually stepped in on this one.

There was a time when some unscrupulous people would write down vin #s at car shows, the do a search to find out where the owner lived, and would steel the cars. Shortly after a few high end theafts, finding out anything about an old car through the vin number became almost impossible.

Thats why I keep all my old insurance slips for vehicles. A few years back I worked at a dealership and typed them all into Carfax to see where they ended up

i bought my 69 charger from a local junkyard in 1970. it was a "total", hit hard in the rear.
at that time, i worked at a body shop that specialized in rebuilding totals. it was there i undertook my first huge ground up project.
my co-workers taught me so many things it was unbelievable. the star of the show, if you could call it that, was the old german guy who ran the frame machine. i learned so much from him, and if it would be possible to do over, i would have pumped him for more knowledge. he was an incredible mechanic, fabricator, and body man.
i have often wondered who owned my car before i bought it, but i should have undertook that task way back then, when it probably would have been easier to obtain the information.
i may peruse the lost muscle car site in the oft chance someone is looking for my car, but that may not pan out as i have owned the car for so long.

Some states will give information about the status of a vehicle by the vin. For example Illinois at the link below, will give last time the vehicle was titled. Then any known flood damage or rebuilt. While its basic, perhaps it provides a clue to someone looking for something. It does work with 13 digit vin numbers.

If there were similar things in other states, maybe we can link to them and build a little history check.

Ohio has something like this as well.

I want my fair share
