A body 416 small block,,,had about 3000 trouble free miles on rebuild. then started with a slight whine under load, goes away at light load or coast.
it has gotten progressively worse in the last few hundred miles and now under load at 1/4 to 1/2 throttle could pass for supercharger. i parked it soon after the bad whine began.
fluid level ok, changed fluid and drippy pan gasket at about 500 miles. no burn or discolor,
. sound is in the bellhousing area and seems to begin at about the same throttle position under load each time.
ran fine 3k miles then went from lite to severe whine in a few hundred.. bouchillon "kickdown" cable hasnt moved off adjustment, not feeling any slippage or seeing anything on the tach.
shifts still feel the same
new ati street converter with rebuild, havent beat on it hard at all.

Sounds like front pump.

Facts are stubborn things.

Especially if it does it in third gear.

These guys are smart, I’d listen to them and agree.

Could also be the regulator valve. A rapidly cycling main pressure regulator valve will make various noises including a whine. There have been several factory service bulletins regarding this.

Since you've already gotten good answers that are most likely accurate......did you look under the car to make sure you didn't run over Bubba Wallace? laugh2

My son had a TH400 (I know) in a 69 Firebird. It would whine. Changed the filter and oil, pan was clean, and still did it. Finally put a screen type filter, instead of dacron, and the noise was gone. I have seen it in a couple other TH400, but not in a Chrysler, yet.

Reading your post again I tend to think along the lines of what JK mentioned.

If it will do it standing still in gear have someone hold it in gear steady throttle while you bring the trans throttle pressure linkage back. If it changes then likely it’s the reg valve oscillating. Could be a filter issue, etc.

Disregard my earlier comment on the pump.

appreciate the replys,,,as an update. dropped the pan had some clutch sludge and quite a few specks of looks like aluminum.
changed filter and fluid still whining.. shifting in drive still feels about the same. but now manually shifting 1-2-D .. 1 to 2 shift 2 is very delayed in lower or higher rpm.. were it used to be instant.
2-3 is now a bit lazy... no whine in park/neut or idling in gear just when load increases gets louder up to the shifts then less after the shift as rpms drop.

i would drop the valve body, disassemble and clean it good, adjust the bands, then try again.
it could still be the pump cavitating, but a clean, properly working valve body would be ruled out. [i think ?]
others can correct me if i'm wrong. i have been wrong MANY times in my life, so this wouldn't be the first time. or the last. laugh2

The factory TSB's dealing with the whine say to replace the VB.
