A friend had his 727 rebuilt with new converter installed with no fluid. He put fluid in the trans. Now should he fire it up in neutral or park to fill the converter ? I know you have to run it through the gears a few times but not sure what gear to start it in ?

Neutral. There is no pump action in Park. Fill to the full mark, get warm and run through the gears and then check the fluid level and fill to the full mark.

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

I always fill the conv before I install it if it's new.

I agree, but in this case the converter was already installed.

uuuum , there IS pump action in park if the engine is RUNNING, and there is cooler circuit flow just no where near the amount in neutral, BUT yes start it in neutral. I usually dump a quart in the convertor before sticking it on the trans so it's not dry on start up.

OK I used the wrong wording the pump is turning but not circulating the fluid through the transmission, The reason for momentary no drive condition when the converter drains back while sitting. Put in Neutral and the fluid circulates filling the converter. Also the reason for the transmission fluid to be checked in neutral rather than park

When I built my 904 I put in a new "manual valve" that WOULD fill the convertor in PARK. I'm suprised more people don't do that.
