My wife and I are looking for a new-to-us car. There are loads of vehicle history reports advertised online and I'd like to get the best value for a subscription. I'd appreciate ideas for which to look at and any to avoid. If there are any free history report sites those are fine, too.

TIA for any advice.

Harold

I've used this one a couple of times, provided me the history I needed, costs about $5.00 (one-time use). I got it from 'AutoAuctionRebuilds' over on YouTube. He has promoted it and has it listed on his page.

( I don't use these kinds of services enough to tell you how it compares to others though, I just know it did the job for me)

I'm kind of stuck on ONLY buying used cars from original owners. For sure, I don't trust any dealer as far as they can be thrown. I've had really good luck with searching out the one-owner deals.

Never, ever argue with an IDIOT. They will drag you to their level and then beat you with their years of experience

I've done OK since high school (a LONG time ago....) buying government surplus cars as my daily drivers. I've only bought one new car and I wasn't impressed. Years ago, there were detailed descriptions of each vehicle at auction (including defects) which made shopping much easier. Nowadays, it's all 'buyer beware' and extra auction fees. I decided to try using vehicle history reports as a way to help avoid surprises.

Sometimes with those report places you get what you pay for. How good the report is is only as good as the sources they use and some of those cheap places keep the price down by not using many soruces.

Our local auction place still gives brief info about their cars along with a carfax report. It's turned into a [censored] show tho because now used car dealers are buying all the good cars from the public auction jacking the prices too high to be worth the risk buying something you can't test drive.
