Haven't walked in your shoes, but I would think for a few hundred dollars the peace of mind alone would be worth it to not "save a few hundred dollars. Good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts" and a good idea to spend it.

Could save a few hundred dollars. Good idea? Bad idea? Thoughts? Bad idea, seriously. I'll agree with this, too. I'd rather sell a spare part or even a car for the insurance premium before I take a chance with Murphy's Law.

i have owned my junker since 1970. in the years since, i have had insurance on it for all but a few years. in all those years, it hasn't seen the road for many of them. i have been hoping to get back on the road, but every time i think it may happen, some damn health issue crops up ! this year, my wife is having memory problems, and i just spent 3 or 4 days in the hospital last week for heat exhaustion and severe dehydration ! [my own fault, or as my old man would have told me : "get a bag of quarters and back up to the a$$kickin' machine !" ]

My opinion-the people who let their insurance lapse on their classics are usually the same people who wind up regretting it. I had 3 cars at one time insured through Hagerty. $45k worth of agreed value insurance for $278.00 annually. If you cannot afford that, you need to re evaluate some things in life. That was then and now it's more.

Of course your mileage will vary, but my friend with homeowners insurance had his non-insured classic in the garage. The car was stolen. The first things the homeowners insurance company (Travelers) did was deny coverage for the stolen car as their homeowners policy does not cover vehicles.
To my knowledge, no homeowner insurance companies cover cars. You need a car insurance policy for that.
