When I installed a set of Indy EZ-1 cylinder heads (w/ max wedge intake ports) on my 440, I had a lot of problems with push rod clearance around the push rod hole when using Comp's 829 solid roller lifters. I felt that some of the issues could be helped with offset intake lifters (like bowtie engines use), but instead, I grinded on the heads until the clearance was "somewhat acceptable", but I still really don't like it. So the engine has sat covered up while I was busy with other stuff. Until this week. A customer brought me a engine to freshen up. It's a 400 block w/ some modifications (including bushed lifter bores), 4.400 bore, 4.150 stroke, Indy 440-1 heads, solid roller cam and SURPRISE!, COMP CAMS offset intake lifters. This engine has been together for over 15 years and in and out of several of his cars, so not ran continually for all this time.
When I measured the offset, I come up with .175" offset, so I stuck one in my engine to see what it looked like. It looks like this is what MY engine needs, but when I try to find this offset in a Comp lifter, all I can come up with is a .210" offset (and the push rod seat height raised .120"). Have the Comp's w/ .175" offset been discontinued, or were these for a bowtie engine, or am I missing something here? I also see the Isky 3772LO180 that is offset .180", but with a push rod seat height of 2.04"?
Those of you that run Indy Cyl Heads w/ max wedge ports, what solid roller lifters do you use? Brand, offset, seat height, ect.?

Thanks, Brian

The reason the pushrod seats are higher for the offset lifter is that they will typically be used with heads that have offset rockers.
Which usually results in the pushrod being at an angle.

On a lifter like an 829 where the PR cup is down in the body a ways, if the pushrod seat was offset, and the pushrod was at an angle.......It would contact the lifter body.
It’s also likely to cause some contact issues if the PR diameter increases.

Which EZ heads do you have that have clearance issues?

I’ve put motors together with std EZ’s, EZ-1’s, EZ 295’s, SR’s, and 440-1’s using 829 lifters, and none of those needed what I considered excessive clearancing for the PR’s.

How much clearance are you trying to get?

I've only found one type of offset roller lifters & I've been using them for 20+ years & bought replacements every 4-5 years. I have 2 MW motors & these offset roller lifters have been awesome, even with the spring being 750 psi at full lift. My motors are both B engines & I've noticed the shorter deck height does make pushrod clearance a bit tight, but nothing a die grinder can't fix.

The heads are EZ-1, Max wedge on intake ports.

I have ground enough clearance already, but with the .175" offset lifter, the push rod is just about straight up and down (not angled) and centered in the push rod hole. Just trying to make it as good as possible.

Thanks, Brian

This are the ones I'm looking at that are .210" offset. Wondering if these will move the push rod over too much the other way?

Thanks, Brian
