Guys,
Picked up a complete 727 for a rebuild. It's been sitting for probably 10 years. Is there a way to check/test the torque converter when out of a transmission? It's a 340 transmission and is going back behind one. Should I get the original torque converter rebuilt, or is there a new one available with similar specs?

If it appears the converter belongs with the trans, and if the converter was kept in the bell housing and if it has a drain plug and if when you drain the converter clean fluid comes out and if the trans upon disassembly has a good pump rotor set that doesn’t appear like trash ran through it I would use the converter.
With the proper tools as shown in the service manual you can test the stator ORC and that’s usually the only thing that fails in the converter on it’s own. Running very fine debris from the trans through the converter can fail the thrust washers. You can check stator end play with a set of good expandable pliers by grabbing the stator.
