One of those things I heard rumors about for decades now but never seen any evidence of besides more hearsay. I always heard the 318-3 crank was cast but shot peened.

I’ve had a few sets of them show up at the shop over the years. Used in HD truck and industrial applications. Ports look to be the same as std 318 heads, from a performance perspective. As long as the performance goals don’t exceed what could be accomplished with std 318 heads, I see no problems in using them........ other than perhaps cold weather operation without the complete 318-3 cooling apparatus on the motor.
As pictured....... the PCV system doesn’t look too effective.

We parted an early 70s 3/4 ton Dodge truck years ago. I remember that it had a 318-3. And a Dana 60. I was told at the time by a machine shop that the crank was the only difference that it had that we might be interested in keeping. Better than others of the time or something like that.
It's been a long time ago. Heck, everything has been a long time ago.......now.

The cranks were heat treated from the factory apparently. I had one in a pretty racey 318 many years ago. The 318 heads were ported quite heavily, exhaust ports were welded up and raised etc. It hurt a couple of big end bearings, the crank linished up fine and looked like new.

thanks all, this motor is coming out to make way for a 440. It seems to be a solid build, but is overcammed and has a eddy torker intake. Like so often, someone threw a few parts together make a "race motor" LOL it will be used as a replacement for a tired 318 in a 79 Power Wagon. I have a performer 318 intake and a 421/441- 278/288 cam that should be much better suited to be a decent driver, with the closed chamber heads on a 76 bottom end I should be somewhere around 9.2-9.7 if they havent decked the block or shaved the heads. I will cc both to get a true comp ratio, and a cursory inspection of the internals . ill follow up with pics in a few weeks as time allows.

not that this pic is helpful other than it is proof of their existence. it threw me for a loop when i pulled the plugs, and didnt see the horseshoe opening around the crossover. when the engine comes out ill post better pics for reference. Whats the problem with that trucks frame???

I have one as well, it was welded up to be a 3.45 stroke and I know its been abused and abused even more but it remains crack free and laser straight and whoever did the offset years ago did a spot on job. Wish I had another oem one.

For anyone interested at least some of the 318-3 cranks were forged and years ago they were sought after by racers and those looking to weld up a stroker crank. They are HEAVY as the rod journals were not drilled. Like most things with ma mopar I can't say all of them were forged, but the few I have seen and owned definetley were forged. almost all 273s (except 1969) and 318s from the poly thru 1968 used a forged crank with no holes drilled in the journal.
