Payne’s legal battles against the county’s appraiser’s office began in 2019, leading to a 11-count lawsuit filed by Shelby Development against Shawnee County and its appraiser’s office. A Shawnee County District Court judge ruled in favor of the county on all 11 counts in April 2022. An appeal has been filed, and a decision is expected within the next two to four months.

With the future of Heartland Park hanging in the balance, the loss of the iconic racing facility would mark a significant blow to both the drag racing community and Shawnee County.

That would mean for us Midwest racers, Bandimere, KID, Topeka, and great bend. Ughhh, I just got my car dialed in and was looking forward to racing. I hope this owner gets his taxes straighten out.

We have our nice 1/8 mile track shut down due to the owner just not wanting to run a race track anymore. It’s a very nice facility built in 2004 or about. It’s been constantly improved with all concrete strip and pits. He can’t sell it for 1.5 mil. So I guess it will be torn down down for a truck stop or something.

Actually about 40 miles east of KC. A group out of Overland Park, KS is doing it. The guy who owns Heartland Park bought the old I-70 Speedway and has opened a dirt track where the old track was. He sold the back part of the property to the OP group and they are in the process of building the track now. He hopes to have it completed this fall or early next spring.

74 Challenger, bought it new. In 1978 I replaced the original 318 with a 446 and 727. Mild cam, Jardine headers, and Holley Sniper EFI.
New engine! 511" RB, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads, Eagle rotating assy, Comp hyd roller cam, Doug's 2" headers.

Mid America Dragway West of Ark City.

Great owners and staff that knows how to prep!

Not sure Great Bend is necessarily "done" but they need to figure out the resurface deal.

I heard they had one of the city's contractors pave it, that didn't sound good to me from the beginning. Then I saw some in car videos from Rocky Mountain Raceweek right after they paved it and it looked ugly.

Hope the KC track comes to fruition. I still love this hobby, everything 3 hours or more away. I guess some folks may have longer commute
