I was going to buy a reproduction group 27 battery for my completed restoration. Figured that would be easy. Of course, like everything else, they're not currently available. So I thought I'd give this battery topper a shot so at least I'd have something that looks like the original red cap battery. Now I can't find a maintenance free group 27 battery anywhere in order to use this battery topper. All I'm finding is batteries with caps, which won't work with the topper because it needs a flat surface.

Has anyone else had this issue? Any suggestions on where I can find something that will work?

I bought a a/c delco 27s battery. It is flat on the top and has the correct length between terminals. Just ordered the topper. Will add mopar sticker on the side. A lot cheaper than a restore battery.

Where did you buy your AC Delco battery? Is there a part number on it?

I am a retired auto tech from a GM dealer. It is 88866112 for the part number. 27s . For me it has a 5 year warranty so if it goes bad I remove the topper and get another one.

Check around auto zone may have them.

Just looked online and it looks like the Auto Zone down the street has one in stock. I'll pick it up tomorrow.

On my Group 24, a Duralast battery from AutoZone was the best fit.
The toppers are wider than the '68-'70 B battery hold-downs, though, so you have to either tweak the hold-down or file some clearance on the sides of the topper.
The other benefit of the modern batteries is they don't gas off and create an acidic mess underhood.
It bugs me to not use the correct battery on an original or correctly restored car, but that's better than re-painting the engine compartment.

Year one sells a wider hold down to fit the battery topper. So you don't have to modify one.

I actually wanted the group 27 with caps.I bought a NAPA group 27 and then I used the push in caps sold on ebay, The toppers make the terminals too short IMO. They seem to fit tight so I hope no leaks.
