Roger Gibson has the right stuff. I have seen motors done with clear and I think they are way too shiny. The OEM formula would be single stage...

perfect timing , i need to paint my engine and an air cleaner for a friend , though i'll just do a single stage ??? no clear coat here .
mike theres a thread started by djvcuda bashing bill hirsh paint that i think had some info on other paint and codes ?
here is the thread you are talking about... https://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/show...part=1&vc=1
i have to agree the enamel that bill hirsh sells is just old school junk...
djv used U-tech 3.8 on a few motors including mine and it is some great stuff. looks great and has held awesome.. looks as good almost 2 years later as it did the day it was sprayed and my car sits out side all the time....
here is the info from the can of paint that was used on my motor....
it is U-tech 3.8 ( its a high solids urathane single stage paint)
yr. 1960 mfg: dupont code: 5067u
color: orange
sfx: k sys: 4 voc: 0.36
mixed 10-23-04
contains lead.

i have used 2 coats of epoxy primer and 2 coats of u-tech 3.8 for 3 engines now... I will NEVER use anything else, that bill hirsh garbage is weak, the u-tech is capable of withstanding brake cleaner, or anything else you throw at it... my engine caught fire, adn I cleaned it up with brake cleaner and dtarting fuild... it just washed the soot away, to reveal clean paint!
I was told too much paint can hold in a lot of heat. Isn't that a lot of paint on the motor? Does it hold in too much heat?

primer is a big waste of time as is base clear. acrylic enamel with hardner or a good single stage is all you need.the more paint [primer] you use on your engine the sooner it will fall off in big chunks.most low gloss engines look like they were painted with spray cans.i will take the Roger Gibson look any day over the home brewed spray can look.
spray bombs work me me , i 'em , not sit around with the hood/off open sipping umbrella drinks
Now you're gonna hurt the feelings of all the guys that like umbrella drinks, you insensitive clod!!
J/K, I also used a spray bomb on mine (Plastikote Hemi Orange) and frankly, most of the spray booth, base clear, bodyshop engine jobs I've seen looked way too glossy and usually the wrong color. I'm sure some people (like HPMike) have nailed it down using those methods, but it seems like overkill to me and trust me; I've gone off the deep end on some other details (many that can't even be seen!). Honestly, before threads like this on Moparts, it wouldn't have ever occured to me to do it any other way. In the old days, the only guys I remember with bodyshop paintjobs on thier motors were the ones with color matched engine blocks and chrome everything.
......what did the factory use, anyway? None of my original engines looked any better than a good spray-bomb job.
Anywho, to each thier own.
