Technically 71 has screws but like they say, you never know, you might have the 70 style...

Are there two different types? One used to terminate the molding around the well and another used if there is also molding on top of the door?

Like a lot of parts, on E body cars, unused 1970 remaining stock was carried over into the 1971 production year, and used up, then the 1971 stuff was used. This happened with the stainless pieces that the convertible top covers when down on the car. 1970 inner fenders were used into the 1971 production year, same goes for 1970 consoles, and in your particular case, those chromed pot metal pieces. That explains your friends car. The pot metal side brackets used on 1970 front seats were also continued into the 1971 model year. My September 1970 Gran Coupe has them. Your friends car probably has them, yours may or may not have them.
Does that help?
