Infolinks (IL) is what has quelled this site for me.
For me, and I think others, I would come here during lunch every-single-day from my work PC which is a browser which cannot block IL and a device which is prevented from downloading another browser. Having to fight the screen being moved, to force ads into my face, is a complete detractor from visiting. Cannot even get logged in without having to contend with IL, let alone try to browse a thread and see what's it about.
Many don't want to have another browser on their device just so they can navigatge this site: I for one did not. Bit this site is still a great source of info, so I gave in and loaded a recommended one on my personal device which blocks IL.
IL impeeds the user experience immensely. It eventually drove me to frequent FBBO- a forum I never surfed. Now, it's my go-to and here is secondary.

This trend has been going on for several years, seen it on a number of forums. Board users are "aging out" or flowing over to Facebook groups which I will never use.

I sure learned a valuable lesson .. I will never buy or sell on here again ... About a month ago I placed an ad looking for a crank in the parts wanted section a person answered stating his " friend " had the part I needed and gave me the friends email ... a deal was made I sent $720 and turns out it was a scam and I am out the $$$ of course the person answering the ad deleted the account right afterwards. So my activity is limited now. Its a shame as I always had good results here but $720 is a lot of money to me ... be careful folks !!! scammers are everywhere!

Why does any car site such as this need a "political" forum? I've never bothered with the political forum on this site and I enjoy that. But I'm also a member of FBBO and there is more activity in the political forum than any other. And there are two disturbing things about that ... 1) those with the most posts are there ONLY for the politics. If you do a bit of searching you quickly see that they don't contribute to any of the car-related topics at all and 2) there is no "discussion", just bitching and name calling. Tom wanted it. His board, his rules.

What are y'all hiding from? Ed My Ex! "cudaboy340" I just did what seemed to be the norm when I joined and went with a screen name. But I do sign my first name to every post I make. I will sign this post with my full name so you can see what I just go by "Ed B" (BTW, I'm pretty sure EdB was taken when I joined Moparts or I'm pretty sure I would've chosen that as a screen name). Ed Buczeskie I don’t want people knowing my identity because I have an expensive hobby. I’ve had parts stolen, been trailed places(including home), hunted down by a guy who isn’t such a good fellow because he traced my car at a body shop(owner told me to steer clear of the guy when I asked who in the world was he), etc. This all without plastering my details on the internet. I really don’t see how it would benefit me to put myself on front street. The handle names allow you to determine if you trust the persons information when you read their posts. That’s enough for anyone to navigate a site about cars. You can also be more candid about a given thing when direct retribution isn’t as huge of a threat. I’m sure some hacker coding whiz can still track me down, but this weeds out at least more than a few possibilities. People are absolutely nuts out there and it’s simple not worth gifting them info because they disagree about a car topic. I’ve made friends off line with people over PM here and elsewhere and that works well.
I want my fair share

I have ad blocker, so they don't bother me at all. I did FB for a short time, don't really like much about it at all, and I sure don't like them tracking me like they do. One visit to FB guarantees at least a month worth of ads. I find the political forum interesting. Sometimes it provides some useful info, but the last 6 months it does seem like a bunch of school kids caring on with the name calling. I still come here nearly every day, to get answers, and hopefully provide a few to someone that is looking for something might have thoughts about. Buying and selling here has always been hit or miss. The just completed deal with 3hundred was a very smooth transaction. Gene

I don't think Tom had much choice in the political forum, people kept posting political stuff in the others and with free speech and all he just decided to pool it all into one forum. I disagree with plenty of people on there DaveRS23 or Kunkle, MadRussianScientist or... but I would still do business with them in a heart beat, I think they are good people and have no ill intentions. People are idiots if they let political differences keep them from each other.
I think the deal for me and why I hardly ever post what I do is because I can't post pictures anymore after the last "upgrade" and on my phone I can't get the adds to stop it is insane the pop ups that get in the way of everything! AdBlock works great on the laptop and I still see and use all the mopar related adds on there but the phone brings up all kinds of stuff non stop that I have no interest in. I made a post about swapping eagle heads onto an early 5.7 and tried to post pics but never could figure it out, I've tried several times over the years but I'm just too old to lean new tricks I suppose.
I hate facebook because I can never find an old post if I want to go add a picture or longer reply than I previously had time for, I hate that people like marketplace so much, I see something on there and get to thinking about it and decide I want to look further into it but can never find it then 3 months later it will pop up again but usually by then run out of money or moved on to another project or something.
I am not causing global warming, I am just trying to hold off a impending Ice Age!

i come here nearly every day. in doing so, i hope to learn things i either didn't know, or have forgotten. i also try to help others when i can, with what i have learned over almost 60 years playing with the mopar brand. for the most part, i have found the members to be a great group. however, i stay away from the political forum because no matter what one's opinion on any given subject, it seems like a person has to get in the mud pit with the opposer to see who can get the muddiest the quickest. i have a fakepage account, but i haven't found a group that, in my opinion, is as good as the group here. i only have a desk top setup, so with adblock, i have no irritating adds to contend with, and it has worked well since i have installed it a long time ago. as i'm closer to the finish line, i'm not apt to change any time soon.

As someone who has been sent to the corner a couple times on this site for inappropriate posts, I disagree about Tom having a choice. Its a car site - MOPARS specifically. You make the rule simple ... ZERO political, religious or racial posts. You get ONE warning then you're banned. I wouldn't expect a political, religious or white supremacist site to have an automotive Q&A forum !!! And if someone wants to start a rant about "free speech" and the whole "I woke up in a free country" BS well ... boot them off too. What are they gonna do, sue you ?!?!?

Facebook is where most people go now. In my opinion, there's no group there that is anywhere close to being as good as moparts is. Facebook is full of BS artists to the point you can't have a meaningful discussion about anything. All facebook is good for is selling stuff. It's still a painful process, but the traffic is there.

I had a weird one with recent sale of the aspen, I put it on a local free trader site. Guy called me , he had no odd accent or anything, googled his number and it came back as owner of a small collector car lot in Illinois. https://chicagocarclub.com/ , we made a deal on car , he asked where to mail check , told him , it never showed up .. waited couple weeks , he said he sent it .. Then he asked me for my bank info to just direct deposit, told him .. no just register letter I'll take that off .. he wanted to do it his way , I never heard from him again .. Not sure if that was some scam or what, it just felt odd

i come here nearly every day. in doing so, i hope to learn things i either didn't know, or have forgotten. i also try to help others when i can, with what i have learned over almost 60 years playing with the mopar brand. for the most part, i have found the members to be a great group. however, i stay away from the political forum because no matter what one's opinion on any given subject, it seems like a person has to get in the mud pit with the opposer to see who can get the muddiest the quickest. i have a fakepage account, but i haven't found a group that, in my opinion, is as good as the group here. i only have a desk top setup, so with adblock, i have no irritating adds to contend with, and it has worked well since i have installed it a long time ago. as i'm closer to the finish line, i'm not apt to change any time soon. I've sold a couple of 68-70 Chargers there. 1/2 messaged me trying to get it bought and 1/2 laughed at the price and threw insults. No matter, the last one was gone within 24 hours at full ask plus me delivering it 3 states away. The problem with Facebook is you don't know the source of the (often wrong) advice. At least with the forums you can get a feel over time for who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't.

When the numbers are good, It doesn’t matter what is said. At all. What is said can be trash but if it creates traffic then it’s gold.
This being true, in my personal life experience I have found S#|+ talkers are a waste of time, man. Same goes for &#|+ posters.
Even the ones I might agree with partially are still ultimately a waste. . Do or say something constructive, or go away…. is how I look at it

Car forums tend to lean to the right, their political sections do as well and usually have no rules. The other side doesn't like no rules and no censorship...I'll leave it at that Everything is affected by "politics". Everything, especially hobbies and activities which are not 100% PC. Maybe you don't want to wade into the mud puddle, but you should be aware of what is going on, as it is going to affect you at some point. When all of a sudden you can't get tags for your old car, don't let it be a surprise.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Most of the sites I read have had similar issues. Facebook groups have taken a ton of traffic from forums, and forums splitting into subgenres have certainly hurt places like this too. This has spawned A/B/C/E bodies only, as an example. Or Yellowbullet, tuning into Turbobullet/Phantombullet, etc.
Like many of you have mentioned, the Facebook groups have more activity on them but the signal to noise ratio is much worse than a place like this.
It also doesn't help that this hobby specifically is mostly an older crowd and people are getting out of it for various reasons.
I follow a dirtbike forum as well and that's about the only one I haven't seen lose traffic over the last decade or so.

i think that forum drove people away Well you certainly seem to enjoy it! Looks like nearly 1/2 of your post's have been in that forum. As far as the mods posting there? Why not? I post there. Tom posts there and Mike posts there. Don't look at it if you don't approve of the forum.....

I love a good political give and take debate. And the political forum started out like that. But now it has degenerated from "you are wrong, no, you are wrong" to "you are a jerk, no, you are a bigger jerk" to "you are an a-hole, no, you are a bigger a-hole" to "eat poop and die, yeah, you too"...... Where is the debate? It has descended into personal insults rather than debate on topics. It is sad to see as there is a legitimate purpose for it IMHO.

Where else are they going to put Doc Fiberglass? They refuse to flat-out ban him regardless of what he says, and probably because there are one or two members that find him cute and funny. You don't really know Eric. He's a normal guy. And without the no holds barred forum the site would have very limited traffic. No traffic dead site.

I check in everyday. The car forums first then the politcal forum. Same routine here, my interest are E bodies, Wingcars, paint, and fabrication/bodywork, if I can add anything to the Q&A, resto forum, or General, I do....then off to watch the banter in the "political" forum....

That's a more than fair answer. I was sort of joking in my reply, but I do get it. Anyone who has ever been to Carlisle knows it's a sleepy little town. Pretty much all of the car people know each other or there's only one degree of separation and being followed isn't really an issue - but even around here I watch for that kind of stuff. Also, I don't think I have anything worth going to that much effort to steal but who knows?? I do like the actual names on Facebook and in my job, it's really helpful. Until recently, I thought most of the Mopar groups on Facebook were great. You quickly learned who really knew their stuff and almost everyone in all of the groups was at least RELATIVELY knowledgeable on Mopars. In the last couple of months, it seems like almost every Mopar group has really gone downhill. I'm NOT criticizing people for not being Mopar experts - I'm NO expert and am always learning. But it seemed like for the longest time, those who didn't know a lot were fairly quiet when it came to answering questions and/or commenting. Lately, however, I see so many people who clearly know very little about Mopars arguing over things that are pretty basic. I've also been seeing for sale ads with pretty solid '70-'71 E-Bodies for $12-$15,000 and people are commenting calling the seller crazy and saying they have one too many zeros in the price. But again, you quickly learn who knows their stuff and who doesn't. Ed

Isn't the unmoderated forum on here just a bit like new cars at car shows? A necessary evil. As us old guys and our dinosaurs fade away, those distractions help to keep it all going?
And then there is the fact that no one is forced to open that particular forum, let alone be forced to read the posts in there.
Master, again and still

Facebook has been in a traffic nosedive for years now and forums are coming back, except this time registering has to be 2 clicks and very simple. No capcha's, no checking e-mails for links, no waiting for mod approvals etc. A lot are using discord but thats not the silver bullet either.
A facebook car group is no different than having a car show at the entrance to a walmart, because its the same people showing up, offering "advice" and asking questions.

This is off topic BUT ... How does bank transfer work in the U.S. ???
Here in Canada to do a bank transfer we get the email address of the person we're sending money to. From our bank account we "e-transfer" the funds to the email address. We also provide a security word that they have to enter for the transaction to complete. If the person's email is bogus or we type it in wrong then the transfer doesn't happen. If the transfer is successful we get an automatic reply from the bank. The receiver can have their account set for automatic deposit OR they have two days to enter the security word and receive the money. At no time does either party need any of the other's banking info. These transfers, regardless of the dollar amount, cost the sender $1.50. No charge top the receiver.
The wire transfers I have done you go through the banks. The seller provides the buyer with their account number, and bank routing, or wire routing numbers. Then the buyer provides those numbers to his bank, his bank then transfers funds to the sellers account. Then the seller gets a confirmation call, or message from his bank when the transfer has competed. It seems to (in my own thinking) to work much like an ACH check transfer, only instead of being mostly automated, humans are used to verify the transaction at the time it happens.

I've seen enough of his posts and gotten enough PM's to know the only thing he is interested in is being the biggest antagonist possible.

Why can't Tom offer a paid membership with no Infolinks? That would be the end of this forum for me, I won't pay for anything on the internet. FABO has Gold membership for people who want to pay, my ad blocker works just fine without paying anyone. I won't use Moparts on my phone, only my laptop, I don't have a need to stay connected while away from home...

Sure buddy here's my info ... Not ! BTW .. beware of Lloyd Whitney from Fort Hood ,Texas Same guy almost got me for $345 for a set of pistons, wanted me to send the money family and friends on PayPal. I sent the money as a product or service, he went hyper telling me I couldn’t follow directions. But that method, g&s will get your money refunded the f&f wont. I got the money back pronto. Same MO, one guy says he has a friend who has what you need at so and so e-mail and to contact him. Lloyd Whitney, scum

You don't really know Eric. He's a normal guy.
I've seen enough of his posts and gotten enough PM's to know the only thing he is interested in is being the biggest antagonist possible. Had the same experience.

Take your pic of any of the social media sites as the answer. IMO they are the cesspool of the world. Like ebay killed swap meets social media has all but killed message boards

Why can't Tom offer a paid membership with no Infolinks? Because you can use an ad blocker and never see infolinks. I use Firefox with Adblocker Ultimate, both free, and never see infolinks.

Infolinks kills the mobile browsing experience which is outdated among it's peers.
From my perspective much of the traffic on a few of the forums is created by 10 or less posters. When most of them left I actually felt good for them because it seemed excessive...as in 20+ hours a day.
At least the political forum ( which I have never clicked on) is based on real life and not make believe like some the stuff previously going on here that seemed to inundate every thread with nonsense.
Then there are the perpetual bucks down whiner/victims of life that pander for a anonymous sympothy...on a car website. And then there is the act of copying what we all see in the news and reposting it here. Yes, we all know so and so died. Again, nothing to do with cars lol. If that's what people like I'm cool with that but do not care to participate.
The race car/ engine section is still good because of quite a few guys however there are the friendly trolls that neither race nor car nor engine. These are the guys thst still copy and paste the six pack tuning guide from the 70's DC bible that is regurgitated all over the internet ( and missing the nextk most important paragraph).
Lastly we have the power adder trolls that will negate any accomplishment that was not achieved N/A. Those numbers are waning however it sounds even dumber that it did 10 years ago. Bud Faubel had a TT hemi in '64...get over it. If you have never grabbed a nitrous kit then best to put that tongue in park until you have direct experience.
Overall Ithink some folks come online for "social media" and the rest of us are looking for or to share technical info with those of similar interest. Multiple forums save us from each other for the most part! : D

If you're seeing ads here you're seeing ads everywhere and they can be much more than annoying! I work at a place that has literally thousands of PCs. Our IT department URGES all of us to use an adblocker tool. I use Chrome w/Adblock Plus on ALL my machines. It works well and is free. I seriously don't know how anyone surfs the web without an adblocker. I tried watching a youtube clip with a friend and ads kept popping up. I was like WTH is that? I never see any of that crap on any site.
I also don't do mobile browsing(especially here) but have heard the mobile version of Adblock Plus works OK.

The difference between watching YouTube on my PC compared to with my ROKU is almost shocking. I'm not aware of any ad blocker for Roku, so I get ALL the ads and as of late, a majority of them won't allow you to skip over the ads..

It's crazy how much pushback and hate I get from boomers over this. Not to mention the ones that claim "You'll burn up your motor on nitous!" and "stock 440 block is only good for 650 hp!" Guys bragging about their high compression, stripped out, 4.56 geared, fiberglassed car 60 ft. times yet here we are faster in our street car that we drive everywhere on pump gas with mufflers and get ice cream!

You guys are reading too far into the disagreements and petty fights. This stuff has always been around. This forum and any other with the numbers it used to pull. People are passing away and social media is taking the rest. New blood isn't entering the vintage side of the hobby either. This is still a great place with a wealth of knowledge, but the sun sets on all things.

I love that one. I told those types back in the 80's and even today, go build your best piece and run it. I'll slap a kit on it and kick your ass with your own sh!t. Unfortunately, there is a lot of personal attack nonsense that goes on here now. Even when the subject has nothing to do with the trigger point subjects that are prevalent, some can't restrain themselves from attacking. You want a suggestion on how to deal with something that another might be able to provide a solution for free... NOPE, gotta be a dick. Some of those and the forum in general, can go find a pro that will charge you for the assistance is the attitude many have taken, or just don't frequent the place anymore. Kind of sad.

I don't suppose part of the problem with the numbers of this site might be related to the fact the main topic of discussion, the company that originally built the Chrysler Corp cars and trucks we all loved and grew up with no longer exists, would have anything to do with the decline in the numbers?
Lets face the facts, the company that built those cars that are the main topic of the board ceased to exist in the mid 1980s. Some will argue it died before that, others will argue it died after that, but few will argue that it is still present. The farther it gets from the original company and the original cars of that company, the less traffic we will see. A few of us diehards will remain, until we too die off like the original company has done, or the content changes to things we have no interest in.
Enjoy the journey while it lasts. Much like the petroleum based motors most of us love, the time may be short, or it may out live us.

I have often stated, the internet was better when you had to work to get access.
In the old Web 1.0 days, the filter was simply the lack of user-friendliness and learning curve aspect of it. Using a (real) computer is easy for most of us and always has been, but there was a time when normies would struggle with something as simple as installing an application or modifying basic settings.
Now, everyone has a retard-proof Fisher Price-tier pocket computer loaded down with apps that are designed for the lowest common denominator to be able to use. There aren't any real settings to mess with, there's no learning curve at all to install things. These newer devices are about as idiot-proof as you could possibly make them, and so many younger Zoomers are actually LESS computer-savvy than Millennials were.
Many Zoomers don't even know what a file path is, or where anything is actually stored or installed on their devices, because you don't NEED to know this in order to be able to use a phone or tablet.
The same goes for the internet itself and the social platforms we all use. Everything is totally centralized now. Under Web 1.0, the internet felt like a big, open space with many "hidden places" to find, like wandering a city trying out different venues. If you wanted to talk about a particular subject, you had to find a BBS forum or imageboard that catered to that subject. There were many different, separate websites dealing with specific topics. Most of those websites have now fallen by the wayside and have largely been replaced with groups or "servers" on centralized services like Discord, Facebook, etc.
The internet feels like there's "nothing to do" on under Web 2.0, the vast majority of online interaction and discussion happens on one of these few megaplatforms where "everyone" is. And all of those platforms are retard-proof too. Literally the dumbest person imaginable can still use Twitter or Instagram or Discord.
At the end of the day, normies primarily respond to convenience. The easier and more accessible something becomes, the more normie-friendly it becomes, the lower the bar becomes, and the poorer the quality of the experience becomes.

[quote=SomeCarGuy][quote=cudaboy340][quote=gdonovan][quote=cudaboy340]What are y'all hiding from? Ed Hi Ed, I totally agree with you on the facebook groups and the often low level of knowledge spoken often. I only use Facebook for the Mopar hobby. I use a buillt up name on facebook because otherwise non car related people from my work/neighbours/public etc could find me. Something I do not want as I prefer my privacy for the hobby. But I have no problem to share my real identity with the Mopar crowd Carsten Woitenek (Oliver Simmerkus on facebook)

i come here everyday.the infolinks dont bother me.but i do know not as many on here like it use to be.facebook has a larger number of people over there and groups i use everyday.then i go on forabodies.com too I still come here, just not as often. I have no problem killing Infolinks on all of my devices. A lot of the comments in this thread mention Facebook. I have avoided Facebook for years and don't know squat about it. That said, What are some of these FB sites that others have been going to?
In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Nothing is constant but change. Guys start lamenting about the past, I just tell them, it ain't 1969 anymore.
There is much I don't like about it either. But, having all the knowledge in the universe at your fingertips, spending money with the push of a button, in your underpants, at 3AM and having the UPS guy deliver it in 2 days, is nice,
How many people called the Summit (or was it Jegs) race result 800 number on Monday to hear Steve Evans tell you who won that weekend? Waiting on the Dragster to see what has been happening? Ordered parts on the phone everytime?
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

……at one time I remember drinking beers at a friends shop on Friday nights and he’d call some 900 number and we’d hear qualifying results for the National events. I don’t cruise through here nearly as much as I used to. iPad user and yeah the “whack a mole” procedure to get a forum open is a bit bothersome. Spend more time reading at FABO and W7-8-9 or small block face book pages.

sure made me look at some members in a different light , pretty sad how they act
I agree. I still look and read that section now and again but I deliberately ignore the trash talk about other members posts. I also won't look at the names of the posters so I don't develop negativity towards members that have lots of useful car knowledge. There can be a lot of enlightened information there but it's like wading through a sewer looking for lost jewelry.
