You guys are reading too far into the disagreements and petty fights. This stuff has always been around. This forum and any other with the numbers it used to pull. People are passing away and social media is taking the rest. New blood isn't entering the vintage side of the hobby either. This is still a great place with a wealth of knowledge, but the sun sets on all things.

I love that one. I told those types back in the 80's and even today, go build your best piece and run it. I'll slap a kit on it and kick your ass with your own sh!t.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of personal attack nonsense that goes on here now. Even when the subject has nothing to do with the trigger point subjects that are prevalent, some can't restrain themselves from attacking. You want a suggestion on how to deal with something that another might be able to provide a solution for free... NOPE, gotta be a dick. Some of those and the forum in general, can go find a pro that will charge you for the assistance is the attitude many have taken, or just don't frequent the place anymore. Kind of sad.

I don't suppose part of the problem with the numbers of this site might be related to the fact the main topic of discussion, the company that originally built the Chrysler Corp cars and trucks we all loved and grew up with no longer exists, would have anything to do with the decline in the numbers?

Lets face the facts, the company that built those cars that are the main topic of the board ceased to exist in the mid 1980s. Some will argue it died before that, others will argue it died after that, but few will argue that it is still present. The farther it gets from the original company and the original cars of that company, the less traffic we will see. A few of us diehards will remain, until we too die off like the original company has done, or the content changes to things we have no interest in.

Enjoy the journey while it lasts. Much like the petroleum based motors most of us love, the time may be short, or it may out live us.

I have often stated, the internet was better when you had to work to get access.

In the old Web 1.0 days, the filter was simply the lack of user-friendliness and learning curve aspect of it. Using a (real) computer is easy for most of us and always has been, but there was a time when normies would struggle with something as simple as installing an application or modifying basic settings.

Now, everyone has a retard-proof Fisher Price-tier pocket computer loaded down with apps that are designed for the lowest common denominator to be able to use. There aren't any real settings to mess with, there's no learning curve at all to install things. These newer devices are about as idiot-proof as you could possibly make them, and so many younger Zoomers are actually LESS computer-savvy than Millennials were.

Many Zoomers don't even know what a file path is, or where anything is actually stored or installed on their devices, because you don't NEED to know this in order to be able to use a phone or tablet.

The same goes for the internet itself and the social platforms we all use. Everything is totally centralized now. Under Web 1.0, the internet felt like a big, open space with many "hidden places" to find, like wandering a city trying out different venues. If you wanted to talk about a particular subject, you had to find a BBS forum or imageboard that catered to that subject. There were many different, separate websites dealing with specific topics. Most of those websites have now fallen by the wayside and have largely been replaced with groups or "servers" on centralized services like Discord, Facebook, etc.

The internet feels like there's "nothing to do" on under Web 2.0, the vast majority of online interaction and discussion happens on one of these few megaplatforms where "everyone" is. And all of those platforms are retard-proof too. Literally the dumbest person imaginable can still use Twitter or Instagram or Discord.

At the end of the day, normies primarily respond to convenience. The easier and more accessible something becomes, the more normie-friendly it becomes, the lower the bar becomes, and the poorer the quality of the experience becomes.

There is truth in the above.

In 1990 the usenet group
rec.boat.paddle
had people on it then that reminds me of Moparts members from 5 years ago.

No advertising on usenet in 1990.
Differing opinions for sure, but mostly respectful conversations.

Reddit is somewhat like usenet, but with far more “noise”

The spontaneously formed Reddit group DRASTIC of “never met in person” virus investigators
reminds me of the spontaneously formed usenet team who, despite never having met before, went to and won the Nation Swiftwater Rescue competition.

I do like the actual names on Facebook and in my job, it's really helpful.

Until recently, I thought most of the Mopar groups on Facebook were great. You quickly learned who really knew their stuff and almost everyone in all of the groups was at least RELATIVELY knowledgeable on Mopars. In the last couple of months, it seems like almost every Mopar group has really gone downhill. I'm NOT criticizing people for not being Mopar experts - I'm NO expert and am always learning. But it seemed like for the longest time, those who didn't know a lot were fairly quiet when it came to answering questions and/or commenting. Lately, however, I see so many people who clearly know very little about Mopars arguing over things that are pretty basic. I've also been seeing for sale ads with pretty solid '70-'71 E-Bodies for $12-$15,000 and people are commenting calling the seller crazy and saying they have one too many zeros in the price. But again, you quickly learn who knows their stuff and who doesn't.

Ed

Hi Ed,

I totally agree with you on the facebook groups and the often low level of knowledge spoken often.

I only use Facebook for the Mopar hobby.
I use a buillt up name on facebook because otherwise non car related people from my work/neighbours/public etc could find me. Something I do not want as I prefer my privacy for the hobby.

But I have no problem to share my real identity with the Mopar crowd

I still come here, just not as often. I have no problem killing Infolinks on all of my devices. A lot of the comments in this thread mention Facebook. I have avoided Facebook for years and don't know squat about it.

That said, What are some of these FB sites that others have been going to?

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Nothing is constant but change. Guys start lamenting about the past, I just tell them, it ain't 1969 anymore.

There is much I don't like about it either. But, having all the knowledge in the universe at your fingertips, spending money with the push of a button, in your underpants, at 3AM and having the UPS guy deliver it in 2 days, is nice,

How many people called the Summit (or was it Jegs) race result 800 number on Monday to hear Steve Evans tell you who won that weekend? Waiting on the Dragster to see what has been happening?
Ordered parts on the phone everytime?

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

……at one time I remember drinking beers at a friends shop on Friday nights and he’d call some 900 number and we’d hear qualifying results for the National events.

I don’t cruise through here nearly as much as I used to. iPad user and yeah the “whack a mole” procedure to get a forum open is a bit bothersome. Spend more time reading at FABO and W7-8-9 or small block face book pages.

I've been a member since '97 but don't post a great deal, mostly because I'm less knowledgeable about this stuff than most of you. I'm much more of a consumer of Mopar information than provider, and Moparts has been a big asset for me and my project. Good entertainment value as well. I hope this site doesn't just survive, but flourishes.

Who were the first USA citizens to develop an addiction to electronic media ?

General William Tecumseh Sherman is reported to have stayed long hours in the Louisville telegraph office soaking in military reports.
Sherman had what is now called Bipolar disease,
formerly called Manic Depressive disease,
where in his case the high energy “Manic” phase went on for much longer periods than his shorter Depressed periods.

President Abraham Lincoln ordered a telegraph room be created in the White House and did similar to Sherman.

As a Captain in the KY militia, John Hunt Morgan wanted to stay neutral and fight neither South or North states.
As a General for the CSA Calvary Morgan found that one of his troopers was a highly skilled telegraph operator who could quickly cut a telegraph line, install two Keys for Morse code going both directions, listen to both directions, then send false messages imitating other operators “pace” of dits and dashes convincingly.

This may be the first electronic media “Disinformation”

I agree. I still look and read that section now and again but I deliberately ignore the trash talk about other members posts.

I also won't look at the names of the posters so I don't develop negativity towards members that have lots of useful car knowledge.

There can be a lot of enlightened information there but it's like wading through a sewer looking for lost jewelry.
