They were done a lot neater on these cars than the typical "fogged on" approach done on the non AAR - T/A cars.
The AAR-T/A cars had the blackout applied first, then masked, hence the neater appearance. Non AAR-T/A were blacked out after color and allowed to overspray over the cowl edge.

The cowl should be blacked out as well...mine is from the factory.
