Whats the difference in a magnum engine and LA motor besides the heads.
Does the new magnum have the same holes for mounting accessories, like alternator , etc
Is it a roller cam or hydralic?
Whats the advantage of using the old or new block.

About 89 & up has roller cam. Bolt patterns for front accessories are mostly the same with the Magnum motors, except all the mounting bosses were moved to the same plane. The magnum motors used one big accessory bracket and serpentine belt to reduce vibrations( and reverse rotation water pump!). Magnum motors were all fuel injected, so no factory provisions for fuel pump on the motor (magnum trucks, fuel pump is in the tank.)

magnum motors also have additional bosses for a different style motor mount, they have lighter rods with narrower big ends, lighter hypereutectic pistons with a smaller, double d-shaped dish vs. the LA 360's round dish, and use a thinner metric ring pack. crank is the same, but the lighter rods/pistons/rings changes the balance factor.
a magnum block, unless it's an early first or second year one, probably won't have the #2 and #4 cam journals drilled to oil the heads like an LA

Correct or not? All the 360 magnums were rollers but not all the roller 360s were magnums? I thought there was a couple of years when the 360s had rollers but were not magnums. What was the difference in the blocks for those years and the LA blocks?
ALL magnums are roller blocks (3.9, 5.2, 5.9)
318's '85 up were roller blocks, but only 2bbl car motors got roller cams until '88. then TBI trucks got a roller cam. all 4bbl 318 were flat tappet cams
'89-91 LA 360's (tbi motors) are roller cam. the lifter bores are taller on roller blocks, and they have raised bosses in the valley for the hold down spider.

****Warning Thread Hijack****** Patrick, So if I was thinking about making a roller cam 408 and want to keep my LA E-heads, headers, and acessories, then getting a 89-91 360 block would be the way to go. Is my thinking correct? Would this require less machining work and eliminate the need for a retro fit roller cam? Howard

if you're planning on using hydraulic rollers. yes, you could use any hydraulic roller cam with the OEM roller lifters. you could also use a magnum block and either drill the oil galleys out like an LA, or plumb oil lines externally to the heads like BB indy heads do....if you're looking to a solid roller, I don't know of any OE-style solid rollers for SBM's....
