Is anyone having or had had issues with this Holley carb? I understand the issue with Venturi size. How was it remedied?

Which version? List number?
I have changed many Holley D.P. with the 50 CC secondary pumps to 30 CC pumps along with the proper linkages to get them to 60 Ft. better, stock they shoot to long and too much loading up the motor for the first second to first three seconds, depending on the squirter size and how the rear pump arm is adjusted scope wrench up

Here’s why the question. One friend has a small block Auto. He tried the carb in question. Off idle boog was horrendous. Now he’s bad mouthy that carb. Another friend, with a stick car, wants to try a double pumper. The 850 suits his engine needs, but he had bin talking to the other guy and getting bad feed back. I’m looking for info, one way or another.

. As far as I know, it was a stock carb, with an automatic. I’m not looking for the possible cause, as much as to what you guys did to fix it.

If it has what is called “idle ease” adjustment, there are no holes in throttle plates from factory. Under the air cleaner stud, there is an air adjustment screw. (Center of carb in venturii are four small air bypass holes.

From what I understand, the issue was/is, with the venturi size. This causing no velocity and thus a poor signal. With that, I'm thinking it causes a lean off idle mixture, not an over rich mixture. Am I off base here??? Make me smart! Also, has this been addressed with, lets say a Quick Fuel carb? The Brawler for example?

You are right, that would be an ultra HP 850.

What's the list number on the carb? Is it 80804 by chance? That's an 850 H/XP model known for a pretty crappy out-of-the-box tune.

. I don’t know the list number, but what you describe is pretty much what I remember. Was there any fix for those issues? Are other 850’s a better choice?

Larry I have a Quickfuel annular 1050 on my Savoy and it was a huge improvement over the downleg booster body I was using before. The throttle response is instant with the annular booster.

The list # should be cast onto the driver side f the main body under the air cleaner lip scope
All carbs are tunable and fixable wrench up
Ask Thumper about that grin

. Gus, I have the same carb in my Roadrunner. The question about the 850 is for a friend of mine. I’m wanting to make sure that the other 850’s other than the ultra xp’s won’t have the same problems I’m leaning towards the Quickfuel, as I’ve had good success with mine.

You gotta be careful about simply using the number "850" to describe a carb these days. Even Holley isn't consistent with the venturi & throttle bore sizes they have with "850" carbs.

Holley
- traditional 850 dp - 1.56 x 1.75
- original "1000 HP" - 1.56 x 1.75
- original "950 HP" - 1.38 x 1.75
- "850 Street HP" - 1.56 x 1.68
- "950 Street HP" - 1.56 x 1.75
- current 850 H/XP - 1.56 x 1.75 (850 Track Warrior, too)
- current 950 H/XP - 1.60 x 1.75

Quick Fuel / Brawler / Proform "race" carbs (no choke)
- 850 - 1.40 x 1.75
- 950 - 1.45 x 1.75
- 1000 - 1.50 x 1.75 (Quick Fuel only; discontinued)
- 1050 - 1.58 x 1.75

List # 9380 is an 850 with annular boosters, flows less than 850.

Yeah... but I was trying to simplify the current labeling issue, not get into the diff's tween booster configurations that also add to the confusion.

But, you're right in that the type / style of booster can have a direct impact on the peak airflow, too.
